We’re in big trouble

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, raw capitalism as it’s practised in the US and much of the Western world doesn’t work and will lead us to ruin…  This story bothers me very much, while I probably won’t live long enough to truly see the consequences of climate change, I really worry about Brandon and his generation. 🙁

For years now, scientists have been predicting that we’d hit the 400 ppm threshold and eventually tip over. Back in 2013, the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii – described as the world’s “gold standard” carbon dioxide observatory – hit the 400 ppm mark, and gradually, all other observing stations followed suit.

In May 2016, the world collectively passed the 400 ppm threshold, with the South Pole Observatory in Antarctica being the last to clear 400 ppm.

As a society we have a really poor track record of planning for the next few years, let alone 50.  Government intervention is required on a global scale and we really need to rein in corporations and businesses.  They’ve shown that they don’t “police themselves” and it’s naive to think they would as companies are designed to make money, everything else be damned.

  1. Hi Colin,

I so agree with you! Here in Sweden there is so much more we can do to help Mother Earth but at least we are finally making the right choices. Progress will be slow as long as money is the priority.

Looking at Canada I see that you are looking at ways & means to bring natural gas and oil to the market. Building pipelines is not the way to go, implementing renewable energy sources are.

Please rally the citizens to make your leaders see the light. We must act now before climate change cannot be undone.

  2. Man I wish North America was as progressive as the Europe when it comes to energy policy but unfortunately the oil industry has bought the politicians (in Canada too) and heavily fund climate skeptics which has sown doubt about whether humans are warming the planet. As ridiculous as it sounds, it’s true and our government has little to no motivation to invest in renewable energies.

It gets me so mad when I see Trudeau and the Liberals pushing the same short sighted projects that the Conservative government did, Canada can be a green energy powerhouse yes but the established oil companies want to make a few more dollars while they can.

Haha I’m trying, I’m a member of all the major green groups in Canada and am doing what I can. Some of the groups I belong to are active politically and try to affect policy from within the political parties but that’s not something I discuss on my blog.
