Thanks for keeping us “safe”

Thank you RCMP for keeping the people of Canada safe with stupid things like this…

According to the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited, Restricted or Non-Restricted the CZ858 Tactical-2P rifle is legal. However, the RCMP claims that these particular examples of the Tactical-2P are not the same because the Molon Labe, Spartan, and Canadian maple leaf markings are not on the original – thus these are “CZ858 Tactical-2P Spartan Limited Edition Proofed 2007 Or Later”, which is not specifically named as an exemption according to Regulations.

So even though the original is approved because this “new” one has a different stock and different markings on parts of the gun that are easily swapped this is prohibited…  It must be because it’s the gun of choice by criminals (it’s not, that’s sarcasm).  I’m all for protecting the public from gun crime but further targeting of legal gun owners is purely political, designed to give the people the illusion that something is being done when it’s not.

I hope Wolverine Supplies pursues this legally and sets up a fund for people to donate to the cause, I’d definitely pitch in a pretty penny for the cause.

  1. Colin, your Canadian guns laws confuse me all the time. You need a Canadian 2A!

  2. Sigh. Canadians are a lot more docile than Americans, we freely give up rights and privileges. 🙁 While both Republican & Democratic (though less so for the Dems) fear gun owners and the lobby, in Canada gun owners are completely in bed with the Conservative party so when someone else is in power they do political things like this to fool the public into thinking something is being done with about gun violence (though it’s not) and the Conservatives only give us token change because they know we have no one else to go to.

Also Canadians have no property rights, most Canadians wouldn’t give a damn about guns but I’ve always argued (with many gun owners here) that we should frame it as a property rights issue. I do my part though and introduce as many people as I can into guns, the more people see it’s a fun safe hobby the better. 😀

  3. Is there a strong anti-gun lobby in Canada?

If I understand correctly the Conservative Party was in power for 8 years. How come they didn’t amend the gun laws when they had a chance?

Is it normal for the police to set gun ownership rights in Canada?

  4. Hi Tim.

Yes the anti gun lobby in Canada is a lot more powerful and more importantly organized than the pro gun groups (who are more interested in bickering with themselves). Since gun owners latched onto the Conservative party, they could take us for granted. We got a bit of incremental change but it was foolish to expect the Conservatives to hold power forever.

No, only in the last few years have they “re interrupted” the laws. Dangerous precedent, law enforcement should only enforce the laws, not dictate policy.
