I enjoy following US politics because it’s so darn interesting, even if I fundamentally disagree with most of the views of one what I feel is a lunatic party and many of the pro business/corporation views of the other but I really like Bernie Sanders. He’s a no BS (despite his initials), tell you his views on things in a specific manner type person and it’s exactly what the US system needs. A lot of the challenges that face the US will also challenge Canada in the years to come and let’s be frank whatever happens to our southern neighbours will affect Canadians too.
Cutting public education funding to cover any deficits may be an attractive option however it’s really a short term plan. The US (and the western world) cannot compete with the Asian countries by raising a less educated populace and if they continue this path, the wealth will simply move Eastward at a faster pace. Instead the US and Canada should take the lead of certain European countries and make higher education free, the more educated people you have the better!
Finally while yes some people have the finest health care in the US, the for profit system simply doesn’t work for the vast majority of Americans and President Obama should have gone with a single payer system with the ACA. To anyone who disagrees all I need to say is that Americans spend more per capita, has a lower life expectancy and higher infant mortality rate than most of rest of the developed world. These are facts and again I’ll admit that anyone who can afford it will be able to buy the best health care in the world but the vast majority will not be able to and one should judge the success of a system not based on what it can do for the elite, but rather what it can do for everyone.
Go get them Bernie, here’s one Canadian that can’t vote for you but certainly wish he could.
