Airsoft Innovations GasCan Review

While I have pondered getting a GBBR to use as my primary for mil sims (my MP7 is more an indoor weapon), one of the things that has been holding me back was figuring out how to carry gas; that is without carrying the damn propane tank. I fiddled with a VFC faux stun grenade gas charger I purchased a few years back (because I thought it was cool) but that thing is only good for ~2 GBB pistol mag refills. Using it with it and my teammates WETTI M4 GBBR mags, I don’t even get enough gas for one full mag of BBs, that and the charger is also awkward to carry on the field.

Airsoft Innovations had just released its GasCan compact refilling device and I think it may have solved the problem for us airsofters.

The AI GasCan is a literally just that, a small portable gas tank that you can bring to the field with you easily.  The package comes with a complete propane adapter kit (PP adapter, duster adapter, GBB silicon oil, manual), the GasCan device and of course the user’s manual.

The first thing you should check out is the user’s manual. Yeah I know the device is breeze to operate but if you’re new to airsoft, it’ll tell you everything you need to know.  The device is compatible with difuoroethane (HFC-152a), trifuoroethane (HFC 134a) and of course propane.

The device is 44 1/3mm in diameter and 130.6mm in height (up to the top of the cap) and according to AI, you can fit two GasCans into a single M4 pouch.  Unfortunately I have one device but I do have a bottle of Ibuprofen which is 45mm in diameter and what do you know it’s true! 🙂  It’s definitely a snug fit but it’s fairly easy to extract, pull on the cap which is screwed on and it’ll slide out. Myself I’d probably stick them in a smoke grenade pouch on my side or back, I only put primary magazines up front. 😉

So here’s a quick breakdown on how to use open and use the charger.  At the top is the cap to that GasCan and removing it exposes the propane nozzle.  It’s made of brass like the earlier versions of the AI propane adapter so take care when filling your mags.  When the GasCan is empty you can unscrew the top of the device, that’ll expose the inside of the can and allows you to drop some oil into the device.  At the bottom is the GasCan fill port.  To use the device, you simply use it like a propane tank, flip it upside down and insert the tip into the GBB mag’s gas fill port.

One of the biggest features of the device is, it allows you to oil your gas mags and the Tornado grenade without having to drop oil between the propane adapter and gas tank!  Simply put two drops of light silicon oil (included with the kit) into the GasCan or eight drops of heavy grenade silicon oil (included with your Tornado grenade) and charge it up with your gas propellant of choice.  Makes lubing your gun magazines and Tornado grenades much easier.  In case you forget, AI includes instructions on lubrication on the label.  Also handy, you can use a marker and check a box which indicates whether you have GBB or grenade oil in the GasCan.  Please be sure to check because grenade oil will mess up your GBB rifles and pistols!

Alright enough talk by now I’m sure you’re wondering how it performs. 😉  I’m not sure if the GasCan is suppose to have an overfill indicator like with TM pistol mags, mine doesn’t seem to shoot propane out when it’s full so I gave the thing a good 10-15 second fill every time.  When the refilling device is full you can feel the liquid propane swoosh around. Testing the AI GasCan I am able to get 2 WETTI M4 mag refills or 4 KWA MP7 mag refills or finally 6 TM Hi Capa 4.3 mag fills per GASCAN charge.  That’s a huge improvement over my VFC gas charger which could only do 1-2 TM 4.3 mag fills.

If you’re a GBBR user the AI GasCan is definitely something you’ll want to check out as it makes humping gas so much easier than dragging around a bulky propane tank.  Leave that sucker at base and carry a few of these, that’ll allow you to do a “tactical” reload of gas on the field should you need it.

The Airsoft Innovations GasCan is a great little portable gas refilling device that GBB/R users will be interested in.  I know myself one of the bigger obstacles holding me back from purchasing a rifle GBBR is that I do not want to lug a tank of propane around with me (or can’t in some cases as some fields here do not allow that). $50 US is pretty reasonable price if you ask me, the various VFC gas charger is about the same in terms of cost and is only good for maybe 1 (2 if you’re lucky)  GBB pistol mags so the GasCan completely kicks its ass in terms of functionality (not to mention having oiled gas)!  It’s definitely the best portable gas filling device available on the market at the moment.

2010 Team GHOSTS dinner

On Friday Brian was gracious enough to host the team dinner at TTAC3 and man it couldn’t have been better. It was absolutely wonderful to see everyone and I was so proud to show Brandon off. 🙂 He was very good last night and man Maggie and I have a great kid! We had to leave around 8:30 PM unfortunately as that’s Brandon’s bed time and he gets fussy if stays up much past that. Sorry that I couldn’t see those who showed up later, it’s alright we’ll shoot each other on the field so I’m sure there will be no hard feelings. 😉

Oh god I can’t believe I forgot my camera! What is the world coming to… Brian took some pictures, I’ll upload those when they’re available.

Mmm video games…

Yesterday I picked up used copies of Assassin’s Creed & Assassin’s Creed 2, I’ve read a lot about those games and generally the reviews are quite positive.  Heh getting ready for the holiday season, I plan to play a lot of video games on my time off (woo for holiday schedule!) and after I’m done these I’ll buy the third installment too.  I have to say when I played a bit of the first game yesterday it did look better on the new TV. 😉

Oh and if you haven’t noticed I’ve changed the skin on my blog, not sure if I’m going to keep this one so it may change again in the near future.

4 hour long cold shower!

So yesterday a few of the boys and I hit FTF to play a skirmish/mil sim style game and I have to say, rain sucks ass lol!  For the most part it was raining fairly hard and everyone got soaked, luckily the crowd that showed up is a bit more experienced and everyone had their wet/cold gear.  We didn’t do as well as I had hoped but that’s how things go sometimes.  We lost the first game and the second one was a draw but I think everyone had a good time.  I especially enjoyed the flanking mission Chris and I did, lol I got close enough that I could have thrown a rock into the opposing spawn point. 😉  I was pleasantly surprised that the repro PCU top I was wearing was waterproof, that’s quite handy.

I wore my helmet for the entire game and found it quite comfortable.  I’m not usually a helmet guy but this one isn’t bad as it’s not bulky or heavy.  The Wiley X glasses worked about as well as I could have asked, even though it was cold it was also very humid and they fogged up like crazy but then again everyone’s goggles/glasses did too.  The Lipo batteries I picked up for the PTW and M249 also worked very well, I had no problems with the PTW and Chris/Marci had a blast with the M249.

Good game but I didn’t get to shoot enough, I want to play again already…

Edit: November 18th 2010 10:32 PM

Playing with GoogleEarth and my Garmin ForeTrex 401, this is the path I walked.  Yeah I got lost even when using the GPS unit, lol I shouldn’t trust my gut. 😉

Quiet time with Maggie

Last night Maggie and I went to see Skyline and I have to say I had a lot of fun, it’s been a long time since Maggie and I had any time to ourselves.

SPOILER ALERT!

Skyline received a lot of negative reviews and to be frank before buying the tickets I was thinking if we should go see something else instead but I’m glad we didn’t.  For the most part the movie was a typical alien invasion style, they come down and wreak a lot of havoc and I’m glad that the humans were not able to mount any true defense.  LOL if an invading alien civilization wanted our planet, there’s nothing we could do to stop them.  There’s little character development but meh whatever it’s not going for an Oscar so whatever.

I enjoyed the CG and it is relatively open ended but it’s clear that the aliens win.

Sigh too bad we had to go home right after the movie but the both of us still had a lot of fun. 🙂

Ready for winter and a treat for me ;-)

Today was certainly productive, in the morning I met up with Brian to pick up a VFC MEU metal kit for my TM MEU and I have to say it’s pretty damn sweet (more on that later). =D  After I dropped by Marky’s place to give him my TM M3 shotty to fix, I lent it a newb at the last game and I think he broke the tri nozzle since it’s no longer feeding.  I would have done it myself but he knows the internals very well and I’ve never taken apart that gun before.  The bastard was showing off his beautiful Marushin M500 shotguns (he’s got 2x 6mm and 2x 8mm!) and I have to say those things are so damn nice…  I told him if he’s ever selling, to throw one my way. 😉

Around lunch time I went to the Active Green & Ross on Sheppard just east of Brimley (yeah I know it’s far) to get my winter tires installed, it’s November and snow can hit us at anytime after all.  Saw Jason there, he was getting winter tires for his Toyota Matrix too and lol since I “referred” him (even though he’s gone there for years, I arranged this deal) I got the bigger discount hehe.  For a set of four Michelin X-Ice Xi2 and four steel wheels it ended up costing $1150.  It’s not the lowest price I was quoted but what sealed the deal was this garage will swap the tires for me twice a year for free, that’ll save me about $160 a year.

Now that I have Brandon, safety will always come first.

In the afternoon I installed the VFC metal kit and man it’s pretty damn sweet.  I had to dremel the frame in a few places to smooth things out but after about 2 hours worth of work it’s complete!

I know it’s suppose to be the MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) pistol but it says US ARMY on the frame.  Meh that’s fine with me though as the GHOSTS are an army unit. 😉

All in all a very productive day, now to relax and rack my slide like a million times because it sounds good haha…

Halloween was a bust… :(

Sigh I guess the cold weather kept the kids away from our house this year.  Heh at least I was able to scare a few with my ghillie suit and Maggie’s mom loved it, she thought it was great. 😉  On Saturday we went to the Oriental center at Sheppard and Brimley so I could pick up a replica rhino arm for my new helmet, I’m not usually a fan of their stuff but I wanted to see if it’d work with my night vision goggles before springing for a real one.  It does and works pretty damn well!

Can’t wait to try it out at a night game, it’s going to be sweet! If I want to take the NVGs off, I can just unclip the arm and store it in my dump pouch. I’d love to get the AN PVS-14 but finding one in Canada is next to impossible, oh well my current setup is still much better than consumer level night vision devices anyways. Too bad I can’t use it with my gun sights though.

We also walked around the mall and Maggie and her mom had a good time shopping while I manned the stroller.  Took a few cute pictures of Brandon and here are some other pictures snapped of the cute guy.

Hehe he smiles a lot. 🙂

Zombies!

Yesterday Charlene held a zombie haunted house game at TTAC3 and it was great!  Instead of going in and shooting up the place participants start unarmed and must navigate through the hospital.  Along the way, you may find weapons (knife, pistol and a shotgun), a partially working flashlight, extra lives (like a videogame haha) and the cure device. I was paired up with a newb so I let him have most of the action, I was pretty much the look out.   Hehe I kind of cheated I’ll admit, I brought my NVGs with me and everything was as clear as day as I could see everything! 🙂

Afterward I went to the second floor to watch the others go through the maze and it was a blast.  Haha many people were definitely freaked out!  Here are some pics taken from the game, please forgive the quality of the NVG shots, they were taken with my Blackberry (I forgot my P&S camera at home) and it kind of sucks.  Couldn’t focus very well in the low light grr!

Despite how bright it looks in the NVG pics, it was very dark and difficult to make things out at greater than 10′.  Hehe I have to say, I love my gen 3 mil spec NVGs! 😉

I wish I could have stayed longer but I had to split at 9PM as I promised Maggie I wouldn’t be out late as Brandon has been fussy the last few days.  When I left there must have been 30+ people in the waiting room waiting for their turn to be freaked out! 😉  Good job Charlene, I hope you do one next year too!

Tired but satisfied

So yesterday I hosted another airsoft game at Flag Raiders, I had some friends who wanted to try the game (who all bailed!) as did Mike so I decided to run some skirmishes.  Jorai also came to play his second game, hehe I think he may be hooked. 😉  Anyway as expected, I personally did not play very much, much of the day I was busy with my hosting duties evening things out mid game.  I did partake in a vets vs newb game as well as a terminator game, which was quite fun haha I was running around with a rubber knife which as you can guess didn’t work too well but it was funny. 😉

Overall the game went well and everyone had a good time which is good, very frustrating for me was that the CA SCAR-L went down again!  That’s 3  times in the last 3 games I lent it out it has gone down or had trouble, this time around the bevel gear stripped.  Grr, the mechbox is stock so there’s no excuse really as the gun has not been used in many games.  I’m really considering selling it as it’s been a real lemon, a surprise since CA is usually pretty good.  I had some other problems too, I lent my TM shotty out to someone and he broke the nozzle…  At least I think so but I can’t really prove it so I’m stuck.  Damn newbs I’ve had that thing for like 3+ years without any problems!

Mike had some gun troubles too so I lent him my PTW for a few games and now lol he says he wants to get one. 😉  Not my fault!  I forgot my camera but here are two pics taken from someone else at the game.

Anyway overall the game went well so I’m happy.  The SCAR is back up but man I don’t know what to do with it now…
