Cleaning!

Maggie’s mom will be coming to Canada on Wednesday and we used this weekend to clean and to build some Ikea furniture. Good thing the house generally is in decent shape so it didn’t take too long to tidy up and vacuum, I also mowed the lawn and did a bit of yard work. On Sunday I built this chest that we purchased from Ikea about 3 years ago and man I know why I put it off, because it’s so damn complicated! So many small pieces and in the end it took me an hour and a half to complete the thing…

Sigh in a moment of weakness I also purchased a TM M9 GBB pistol. I know I shouldn’t have but the price was good and I like TM pistols. It’s a very basic gun, one of TM’s older designs, still I look forward to getting a metal kit for it as a FMU TM M9 would be pretty sweet. πŸ™‚

Now I can carry my NOD!

One thing that’s always bothered me is having to leave my PVS-14 at base camp when I play mil sims. During the day it isn’t so bad but in the evening or dusk I’d like to have it with me in case I’m out for a prolong period of time however having it on my head sucks since it adds a bit of weight. Well worry no more as I picked up an Eagle canteen pouch and a PVS-14 pouch insert and I think this is the solution to my problem.

The insert is padded so I don’t have to worry too much about banging around, I mean I don’t want to fall on it but if I run into the wall I should be ok. Now when it starts to get dark at games, I can carry the PVS-14 with me and be ready if I’m on the field for longer than expected. πŸ˜€

Edit: After playing around with my new setup, I do like it but I’ll need help from a teammate to pull out the PVS-14 because my vest is too high for me to reach.

What a waste of time…

Sorry I haven’t posted much in the last week, it’s been very busy at work and in my personal life but I did want to post a bit of a rant…

Retail airsoft stores are few and far between in Canada and every now and then for some reason I find myself paying AirsoftDepot.ca a visit. The temptation is higher now too since I moved closer about a 10-15 minute drive from the place and every time I buy something, I’m disappointed… I guess my story starts last week so let’s get to that first.

Maggie and I wanted to go out for lunch and wanting to repair the ARES CQBR I decide to go to AirsoftDepot.ca’s store to pick up the buffer tube I need. While there I saw an Element Manta strobe, the box claimed it could do both red & IR, it wasn’t super expensive so I figure why not. I know it’s not going to be as good as the real thing (and that my boys would make fun of me for buying a replica strobe) but I guess the Chinese in me came out lol.

So when I get home, I pop a Surefire CR123 battery into the thing and unfortunately it doesn’t work. Frustrated, I decided to bring it back for an exchange but there were no more red/IR replica manta strobes available. On a whim, I take a battery cap from another strobe (owner was ok with it) to test and it works so I give the guy the strobe with the broken cap back and he puts it back on the wall… Whatever I don’t know what ended up happening to that strobe, perhaps he just put it there for the time being and sent it back, I’m also not saying that he’s selling broken merchandise knowingly.

Anyway the strobe ends up being a POS (as expected I guess), it doesn’t do IR, the red LEDs just glow at a much lower brightness but it’s noticeable at about 20′ in the dark. I decide I didn’t want it but didn’t want to go back to the store a third time on the same day. At least to be fair the owner of AirsoftDepot.ca does allow you to exchange things if you’re not happy so that part is nice.

Fast forward to the today, I bring the Element Manta strobe back to exchange and pick up a few parts, odds and ends mainly because everything he stocks is generally garbage. I get home and when I put a fore grip I grabbed off the shelf onto one of my guns, it’s broken right out of the packaging! It was the was opened and the last of the colour I wanted but god are you kidding me. Luckily it’s something I can fix but that’s it, I am never buying anything from AirsoftDepot.ca again.

I’ve probably been there a handful of times and have generally never been satisfied with anything I’ve purchased there. Perhaps I’m not being fair, most of the stuff on my guns and my gear is real so comparing repro equipment to real parts is wrong but yeah I am not going the cheap route every again because it always just leads to headache.

The buffer tube for the ARES CQBR works great, it’s kind of hard to screw up a metal tube but in any case, lesson finally learnt! Ain’t buying crap ever again.

Ultimate Airsoft, this time with a fireteam!

Since I couldn’t go to Derek’s game on Sunday, Maggie said she wouldn’t give me a hard time if I played Ultimate Airsoft again Saturday night so lol I jumped at the opportunity. Also joining me would be Jason, Stephen and Mario (who also had to play on Sunday, tough guy!), yay we’d have a full fire team this time around! UA wasn’t as busy as last week and there were maybe 14 people, the four GHOSTS, 3 MSF guys, 3 SWAT style players and a few walk ons. Since the opposition consisted of actual teams, this time around the quick skirmishes was more challenging though we were still successful the majority of the time.

Took a bunch of videos and here are some of them… I did have a problem with two Filipino guys calling hits (not part of PR lol) and in one of the videos, you can clearly hear me shoot him while Jason asks him if he’s out, when he says he’s not I tell him in not so nice words I just shot him, when he sees me he accepts and leaves. This all happens at less than 10′ so it’s a bit lame but whatever, later in the night I just started firing for effect and it worked quite well as the PTW’s trigger is fast and I can pump it quick. πŸ™‚

If you only watch one video the last one is the most entertaining. πŸ˜‰ I do walk through a dark area but I come out and lol it was a lot of fun firing around the corner.

A bit before we left, the owners of the venue was nice enough to give us a low light games and Jason and I took full advantage of that with our NV. For some reason in one of the games when we were attacking, the other team decided to defend their area… While it was dark to the naked eye, it was bright as day to me and I had no problems picking all four of them off with double taps and I have to say I love my PEQ-15 too (in training low power eye safe mode…)! no one said airsoft had to be fair right. πŸ˜‰

All in all a good game, probably would have had more fun at Derek’s game but this is the best I could do and I had fun.

Did you enjoy your labourday weekend?

Sitting here at my computer Monday afternoon, I have to say it was a wonderful last long weekend of the summer and yes it’s one of the “I’m happy” type posts, but hey I am quite content! πŸ™‚

Friday seems so long ago already but might as well start from the beginning. Um I went to replace my green bin but had to go twice as the first time I went to the waste transfer station the offices were closed (the station opens to the public at 6AM but the offices open at 10AM). Meet up with some former coworkers for lunch and that was fun too, haha they have to be extra nice to me now since I’m officially a client. πŸ˜‰ Afterwards I meet up with another friend to drop off some stuff then went home to play with Brandon. πŸ™‚ Man I truly understand the saying “kids have unlimited energy” as he’s always on! Running around, climbing stuff and general hyperness, yeah he’s a lot of fun but also a handful.

Saturday we went with Jessie, Jason & Logan to St. Jacobs and it was fun! There was a farmer’s market, some outdoor stalls selling nick nacks (crap Maggie likes lol) and best of all an old fashion train. Brandon and Logan loves trains because of Thomas the tank engine and we thought it’d be fun for them to go on one and yeah it was a great idea! πŸ˜€

Hehe yeah it was a lot of fun… The train wasn’t going very fast (I could probably run faster) or very far and there were a ton of families doing the same thing and the kids loved it! While waiting for lunch to get ready (that was a bit of a joke, took like 20 minutes to get a burger and fries) we visited the Lego store and Brandon had fun there too… The Thomas the Tank Engine Lego creation was absolutely awesome and lol it was like it was meant to be.

We left after lunch and wanted to go home fast as Jason and I were to go play again at Ultimate Airsoft in the evening but I’ll get to that in another post. πŸ˜‰ When we got home, Maggie was kind enough to let me nap for about an hour, definitely needed it as I was pretty darn tired from being out in the sun all day.

Sunday was pretty busy as well, groceries in the morning and I went to my parents place to help my dad with his new computer. By mid afternoon we had to get ready to go to Charlie’s moon yuet (Mike and Emily’s 1 month old son) and hehe I have to say I’m now a softie… I absolutely LOVE babies and miss it when Brandon was that size. Um I was a bit of a dumbass and forgot my camera, still it was fun and I’m glad I went. πŸ™‚

Today, well it’s not over yet but this morning I did a hell of a lot of house work. Mowed the lawn, pulled weeds, cleaned out my garage and man I’m a sweaty mess… I probably should go take a shower but I know I have a few other things to do in the afternoon so I’m going to wait and do it later. Good thing I’m Chinese and don’t have BO. πŸ˜‰

Sigh too bad I have to go back to work tomorrow and I know it’s going to be freaking busy! Such is life right…

Ultimate Airsoft

So Jason, Cameron and I decided to check out Ultimate Airsoft and I have to say the field has a ton of potential. When we arrived, we noticed about 40-50 players so I was worried that it’d be a night of grinding frontal assaults but the groups were split into two, the walk ons on one side and what I’ll call the Sgt. Splatters group on the other and each group rotated on the field. Good thing for me as I did notice a few people I didn’t like but lol they were in the other group so no big deal for me.

The skirmishes we played were quick and dirty and most games either had a 2 minute or 5 minute window so it encouraged fast play. The field itself is rather large though we only used around 2/3 of it and it’s what I envisioned a large TTAC3 to be. Some corners were very tight but between structures there was a decent amount of room to maneuver.

In the video there are four short games, lol the opposition was pretty light as we were playing against newbs who didn’t really know what to do and attack… Much of the night, Jason and I were able to completely come around them to either shoot or mercy them from behind. πŸ˜‰ The night got progressively more difficult as the team we were on got smaller and smaller, at one point there were 4 of us and we had to attack a 7 defenders, lol anyone who plays airsoft knows you need 3-4x the number of attackers when playing attack and defend so we lost that one but overall the night was still great.

During the breaks I showed the owners the PVS-14, Jason and I brought our NV with us as we didn’t know what to expect and was hoping there would be some low light games (but there wasn’t till the last zombie game of the day). After the night was done I showed them how useful a PEQ box can be, lol they were definitely impressed and have not seen hardware like that before. πŸ™‚

I love how receptive the owners were too of suggestions on how to improve the facility. There are two choke points that can cut off 2/3 of the field if you’re starting from the front, they acknowledged it and are already working on a bypass to improve flow (the field is still a work in progress). Everything else I felt was very reasonable, the field fee of $33 was a bit high but whatever it’s a dedicated airsoft only field right. They haven’t instituted the field only BB rule yet but even when they do, the prices again are very reasonable (1000 BBs for $10). I heard a few others bitch and complain about that and I told them outright that Ultimate Airsoft is not a charity case, they’re in it to make some money and that there’s nothing wrong with that.

That’s one thing that has always driven me crazy, we can spend thousands to equip ourselves but complain about field fee and BB prices, get real. If you want to play, you better be ready to pay.

Had to put someone in their place

I also spoke to a few of the other players during the break (typical shooting the shit stuff) but there was this downer from the 6mm fighter team who kept insisting NV was a waste of money and that he’d never spend money like that. Initially I tried to be nice by telling him that I’m a bit older, my career is established and when they’re my age they’ll be able to afford things like that but he was not having any of it and it became a bit of a pissing match. The dude even had the nerve to tell me if I saved the money on my airsoft gear, I could have bought a better car (funny since his car was no better than mine). Haha compared to the average airsofter (at least in the Southern Ontario area) my life is a beacon of success and have no problems doing a “one up” match if he wants to play that stupid game.

After about 5 minutes of this nonsense it got as far as comparing who has a nicer home, I decided to go “nuclear” to end this and told him I just purchased a $700k house and that I’m in the market for a new Porsche 911. One of his friends could see things were getting heated and jumped in telling him if he had the money that he’d buy NV and stuff too… Again I absolutely hate show offs and I’ve always tried to live a modest lifestyle but this dude definitely rubbed me the wrong way. Yeah I also get envious of what others have but not to the point where I have to ruin other people’s fun…

Anyway enough of that BS, Jason, Cameron and I had a fun time and we’ll definitely be going back. It’s a shame the place has been infested by the Sgt. Splatters crew but whatever if I have to shoot their camping asses next time, then that’s just what I’ll do. πŸ˜‰ Hopefully next time I can bring a few more GHOSTS with me, we’d definitely own the facility as CQB is “our thing”.

Custom NV counterweight

So most of the guys on the team have gone with EOG counterweights to balance their helmets when running NODs but I wanted to go a different route. Something about putting dead weight on my helmet didn’t sit well and I figure there must be a way to put something useful up there. πŸ™‚

Sorry perhaps it’s not the best angle to illustrate, what I did but was glue some velcro hooks onto the back of an Esstac M4 Shorty shingle, place it over the helmet velcro loops and reinforce the whole thing with some paracord. Once the mag pouch is firmly in place, I put a MAG VN PTW 90 rd magazine into the shingle.

It seems to work pretty well, at least at home but I won’t really know till I try it out on the field. It might not be as pretty as the EOG counterweights but at least it’s useful! πŸ˜‰

GHOSTS house warming trial…

So let’s start at the beginning…

This morning I went to Home Depot and bought an electric Black & Decker 18″ lawn mower, from the reviews I read it’s suppose to be pretty good and I need a lawn mower pretty bad as my lawn is getting long! Also picked up a few gardening accessories (my personal hell lol!) and the deweeder tool I picked up is so much easier than using a hand held spade to remove the dandelions.

At around 11AM, I had a family of religious people come pay me a visit and boy did I have fun (I’m not sure what specific faith they adhere to but it’s one of the many Christian versions). πŸ˜€ They first asked me if I were religious to which I reply “No, I believe in empirical evidence”, then the husband talks about god and how if I stumbled upon a house that there must have been someone who created it and tried to relate it to god… I told he did his speach that while I’m not opposed to the idea of a god existing, I do not believe it would be a “human” god. I told him that “frankly worshiping someone (who allegedly existed) 2000 years ago or whatever seems silly and that if the answer to things is ‘god did it’, what’s the point of creating an enlightened society”.

His next argument was that just like Brandon should respect me, I should respect and pay homage to god for all the wonderful thing it does for me and my rebuttal was that I don’t understand why such an all powerful being would create a world inhabited by people only to have those little beings worship it. LOL I don’t think they liked it when I said to me “it seems odd that god would have an inferiority complex”. I also mentioned that if this were so, why would god allow all these horrible things to happen in its name? If it gave us free will, why would I be punished for not believing?

At this point the wife chimed in talking about the after life and how I need to accept god in order to prosper after I die so I mentioned that as long as I live my life like a good and just person, I don’t understand why wouldn’t I be welcomed in the kingdom of heaven? Just because I don’t believe, I’m damned for eternity? What type of loving god is that, you can do what you want as long as what you want it is “its” way… Note I removed “he” from the reference because I don’t understand why god would be a guy or girl…

LOL you can always tell you’re “winning” when these people change the topic and to be fair the missionaries (I don’t know what else to call them) weren’t pushy and were very respectful. Despite the quotes I picked out, I was nice about things too. These people genuinely believe in what they’re talking about and took time out of their lives to try to “help others” and even if I don’t believe in it, I have no right to be an asshole about things.

I was a bit disappointed when the husband and wife started to pack up and leave (they were at my door with their material), usually it’s the other way around. I told Maggie I hope more religious people come to my door as I enjoy talking to them about their faith. πŸ˜€

In the afternoon Jason, Jessie, Logan and Mario came over to see our new house and it was great. I always enjoy having friends over and I was dying to show them my new place, it’s something Maggie and I worked hard on and am proud to show to others. For the first time too, Logan and Brandon were actually playing together! They were a bit tentative of each other at first (understandable) however later on they really opened up and it was so cute.

Near the end of dinner, Brandon and Logan were chasing each other laughing (B was laughing louder) and it was absolutely awesome. I wish I caught it on camera but yeah it was very funny to watch the two kids interact.

Mario, Jason and I snuck out after dinner and Mario painted my Ops-Core helmet, I was missing green so I may redo the paint job but overall I think he did a good job.

Now that the helmet has been painted I may redo it myself, I was just too chickenshit to do it previously myself. πŸ˜‰ I also go to see Jason’s real LBT 6094 and it’s freaking nice… I think I’ll have to get one soon too, it just seems wrong to be playing airsoft with all the nice stuff I have and a fake vest. In any case I’ll do it later when Maggie isn’t paying attention. πŸ˜€

The boys later ripped on Mario for being a wuss for not asking a girl he’s interested out and that’s always fun right. πŸ˜‰ Haha reminded me of when I was a teenager, I could have sworn I had these types of conversations before…

After Jason, Jessie & Logan left I drove Mario home. Figure if he took transit it’d take him 2 hours to get home instead of it being a 25 minute drive. Good thing I did too because it got wet really fast! All in all a great day, too bad it had to end…

Operation Rhino 2012

So over the weekend I attended Operation Rhino 2012 and it was well an interesting game. We were playing at a new facility, basically an industrial warehouse and again there were three teams. Myself I was on the US side and in charge of Alpha platoon which consisted of the GHOSTS (about 8 of us), Xcaliber and the DMZ crew from Niagara Ontario.

I had a heck of a time controlling the DMZ crew as they “wanted to get some” and kept doing their own thing at least at first. There were some tense words exchanged with them, I understand that we’re playing a game but a mil sim is a bit of a different animal and I think they showed up expecting a skirmish. In the 7 or 8 years I’ve been playing, I’ve done my fair share of shit jobs from mind numbing guard duty to moving/building barricades but if it was asked of me, I do it because it’s part of the game. It may be boring but someone has to do it and if you complete your tasks without complaining, you’re a dependable asset. Undependable assets don’t get jack because you can’t depend on them to follow through with orders… Yes it may suck but I mean that’s what one signs up for when playing a mil sim… Totally ridiculous at first but a bit better later after a blow up between me and them.

The game itself was ok, I didn’t enjoy it as much as last year’s game but then again I was literally fighting with my own platoon for control so that took a lot of pleasure out of things (and no helo lol). The missions were well thought out and the other two sides definitely gave us a good run for our money.

Jason got to play with his PVS-14 for the first time, we didn’t get as much dark action as I would have liked, the Russian team set up spotlights which to be fair was an excellent way to negate the use of NV but we didn’t have any way of disabling them till much later in the game and even then had to physically touch or unplug the lights… Oh well whatever, ain’t going to complain about it now and it was a good idea!

I’m a bit disappointed by the response on Airsoft Canada and it’s obvious the people who are complaining simply are mindless trigger pullers who could not grasp the concept of a mil sim. No matter, we’ll retool and refocus our efforts to bring an even better game next year. I have a large mil sim idea that I’d like to see through next year if possible. πŸ™‚

Here are some pictures from the game, sorry about the large size as I’m too lazy to edit them down.

The RC car that Eddy made was absolutely awesome and the mini gun was a lot of fun to play with, darn now I want one… πŸ˜‰ I really like the in game photo of Mario and Jason, that’s pretty darn cool and the one of Eric is good as well. I am in a three of the pictures but you wouldn’t be able to recognize me with all the gear on. πŸ˜‰ Yeah Fabio didn’t bother to change into his camo after camping, lol playing airsoft with your PJs on is awesome!

Not the perfect game but I had fun and would do it again… Hopefully with more than 45 minutes worth of sleep haha.

Spending other people’s money…

With the new house purchase and all the associated costs with that, money is tight for me so if I can’t spend my money I enjoy making other spend theirs. πŸ˜‰ Jason is my latest victim, he has been saving money to get a PVS-14 and initially his plan was to save money now and get it for next year. Well an opportunity came up as Chris had an extra one to sell so hehe I meddled in other people’s affairs and got Chris to sell it to Jason.

It keeps the technology “in the family” so to say and now Jason doesn’t have to next year, he can use his own NV at Rhino 2 in a couple of weeks. Hmm I think that makes nine generation 3 units on the team now, heh yeah we like our technology!
