Yay for Canada day weekend

So I certainly had a fun/busy weekend and I hope you did as well.

Things started off early after I dropped Maggie off at the subway I took Brandon to Earl Bales park to play. It was ~8:30AM in the morning and I figure most of the big kids wouldn’t be there yet and I was right, he had the playground to himself for pretty much 30 minutes which was nice. After the older children started to arrive we played mainly in the little kid area as I didn’t want him to get in the way and possibly get hurt.

Afterwards we went home and chilled there, he’s always a bundle of energy so I was climbing up and down the stairs a lot lol. When he woke up from his afternoon nap, I took him to Center Point mall, he wanted to go out but it was freaking hot so I figure a walk around the mall may be more fun. He wasn’t much in the walking mood so I had to carry him around and he’s pretty freaking heavy lol. On the way out I dropped by the dollar store and he loved all the cheap toys on the wall, I tried to steer him towards the sports cars but he would have none of it and wanted this truck combo… Sigh what is it about trucks that’s so awesome?

We called it a night early as the next day we were going to Buffalo as a family…

Saturday morning started early for me, I went to use the bathroom at 3:30AM and couldn’t fall back asleep afterwards so I went downstairs to watch some TV and there was nothing good on as usual. Come 6AM Maggie gets up, we start to prep for our trip and at 6:30AM we finally grab Brandon. Initially I was hoping he’d stay asleep the entire time but as I carried him down the stairs he woke up. After buckling him in, we went to my parents place to pick them up as I invited them to come with earlier in the week.

It was a tight squeeze for the 5 of us in my Toyota Matrix but luckily my mother and Maggie are small. The trip went well and Brandon wasn’t super fussy during the drive there and back so I consider myself fortunate. I didn’t buy much, the only thing I’m super happy about is scoring a set of Oakley S.I. Assault Boots in tan for $75US!

Sunday morning Maggie and I took Brandon to a local park at Yonge & Finch that had a water fountain play area for kids and Brandon loved it. He was a bit scared so he didn’t actually run through the fountain but he did run around the periphery and get all wet. Hehe the swimming trunks we bought for him the day before were too big and kept slipping off, it was pretty funny.

We didn’t do too much afterwards and Monday we pretty much stayed home and relaxed.

Sigh 4 day weekends go so fast… Oh well it’s always fun when you have a son like Brandon. 🙂

KWA H&K HK45 GBB Review

I’ve always liked KSC/KWA’s H&K USP line of pistols, the feel and ergonomics are great however I hate the proprietary HK rail. Finding H&K compatible accessories is an absolute pain and the H&K rail to picatinny converter just looks stupid. When H&K announced the HK45 pistol, I knew it was only a matter of time before KSC/KWA came out with the airsoft version. 🙂

Anyway fast forward to today and woo I am the owner of a new KWA H&K HK45 airsoft pistol. It’s a full sized gun with a polymer lower, metal slide and plastic barrel. The retail kit also comes with the KWA HK45 manual, warranty card, KWA sticker, bottle of silicon oil, bag of 0.2g BBs, lock out key, hop up tool and another grip backstop.

The HK45 uses the same NS2 gas system that powers all of KWA’s current generation pistols & GBBRs, though this gun is not officially a PTP (Professional Training Products) device. That’s ok with me though, I don’t like the ugly PTP markings anyway. 😉 There are the standard Umarex markings and warnings on the right side of the HK45. It doesn’t bother me but I know it would bother the purists. After picking up the pistol, you’ll notice that it has pretty good heft to it at 0.87kg, though about half is due to the magazine.

If you’ve handled a USP or MK23 pistol in the past, you’ll feel right at home with the KWA HK45. For those who are new to the platform, the biggest thing you’ll have to get use to is the magazine release. Unlike the typical button mag releases on the M9, Glock or 1911 platforms, the HK45 uses a lever system. Rock the lever towards the grip of the gun and the mag will slide right out. It’s not as fast as the button release (then again I probably just need more practice) but the big advantage is, you won’t accidentally engage it when the gun is holstered. I know I’ve lost some Glock and Hi Capa mags in the past using cheap holsters (not a problem if you use a platform specific holster like a Safariland).

The KWA HK45 slide locks back after you’ve fired the last round from the magazine, slap a new mag in disengage the slide lock and you’re ready to rock and roll. Both the magazine catch and slide release are ambidextrous which is good news for lefties. On the left side of the gun’s manual safety/decocker but it’s only accessible when the pistol is held in the right hand.

The hammer can be manually cocked into the rear position and reset with the decocker. The KWA HK45 has dot iron sights, line up the three dots and pull the trigger. As mentioned earlier the HK45 comes equipped with a standard 20mm picatinny rail which allows you to bolt pretty much anything you’d want onto the gun. With the USP or MK23s, you need custom accessories compatible with the proprietary rail. I was able to install my Streamlight TLR-1s on the HK45 with no issues. Under the picatinny rail, you’ll see the H&K markings along with faux serial number (I don’t know if they’re unique or the same on across each gun) and the standard H&K warning under the trigger guard.

The pistol grip is grooved for your fingers and the pistol grip is textured to improve grip. There’s an extra base plate that comes with the KWA HK45 and the extra one I have is the same as the one installed on the gun. Not sure why you’d get two of the same but it’s possible my retailer mixed things up. Personally I did find the pistol grip a bit big by default (I have small hands) but it wasn’t too uncomfortable and it’s definitely not as large a MK23 or Desert Eagle pistol grip…

The HK45 mag is well… a magazine. As with all KSC/KWA pistols pull the follower down to the bottom and a button will activate which keeps it locked in place, allowing you to load BBs into the gun easily. Unfortunately the mag lips are reinforced so you won’t be able to use a speed loader’s GBB tool. On the baseplate there’s it says HK45 and there’s a hole for the fill valve. KWA fill valves are silent and do not indicate when full, a good 5-7 second gas charge should be sufficient.

Taking the KWA HK45 apart is identical to its USP line of GBBs and very similar to 1911s. Align the slide’s notch with the slide release and pop it out by pushing on the rod on the right side of the gun. After that’s done pull the slide back then push forward and it should slide right off. Oh before doing the above though, remove the magazine first haha!

With the slide off you can take the outer/inner barrel and recoil spring guide out. Should you need to repair the trigger mechanism, you can take everything apart but for the purposes of this review I’m going to be lazy and leave it as is. I’m also going just show a picture of the blow back mech, I don’t really feel like taking it apart either. Note the KWA HK45 hop up is different from the USP line, new design which hopefully makes the HK45 more consistent than the regular KWA pistol.

To adjust the hop up with the KWA HK45 you’ll need to keep the hop up adjusting tool handy (it’s the same for all KSC/KWA pistols), counter clockwise is turning hop up, clockwise is turning hop down. With the HK45 I found that when the slide was in the locked position, the hop up unit was too far for me to adjust with the tool. Rather it was easiest to adjust the hop up with the slide 3/4 way back.

Silencers are cool for pictures but I don’t use them on the field so I removed the orange threaded tip from the black plastic outer barrel. Took all about 5 seconds with the pliers, after I just shaved off some of the orange bits of plastic left on the black outer barrel and gave it a quick once over with a sharpie so everything looks nice and clean.

Now to the fun stuff

Thought I’d never get through posting details about the gun but woo let’s get to the shooting! Like all NS2 KWA pistols, the blowback on the HK45 is excellent. Very crisp and quick, the gun feels great to shoot and it’s pretty darn loud! With 0.2g BBs the HK45 chronies in at 345 fps according to my Madbull chrony (I don’t trust this thing much frankly but I don’t have my old Guarder anymore) at around 24C. With 0.3g BBs the Madbull chrony is reading 340 fps or the same energy as 414 fps with 0.2g BBs! Remember GBB/Rs are variable energy weapons so play fair and adhere to the energy rules when you go to games. I’ll be buying another chrony soon and will retest the HK45 though to be fair fps readings I get are consistent with what I’ve seen other HK45s online and is similar to my old KWA M9 PTP (god can’t believe that review is almost 5 years old already).

The magazine holds 29 rounds and with a full gas charge I can get about 2 1/2 mags worth of BBs through the gun, that’s pretty efficient!

Oh I did notice one thing, buying HK45 specific holsters is quite difficult! There are not many on the market and I absolutely hate using generic or universal holsters. I read that USP holsters should work but haven’t been able to confirm it yet, I may just take the plunge and pick up a used Safariland 6004 USP holster anyway as they’re not too expensive on eBay. Probably won’t use it much as my secondary (the team runs TM 1911s there) but when I do use it, I’d like to use a good holster.

TM 1911 MEU, KWA HK45, TM Glock 18C

That’s it I guess, I will post updates when there are some. If you’re a Canadian you can order this gun from Revolution Airsoft for $195. I didn’t buy my gun through them but it’s a pretty good price none the less.

Happy Father’s day!

A bit late but I hope all the fathers out there had a good fathers day. Before I get to that though I’ll start with my weekend.

On Friday I attended a private training session at TTAC3 and it was fun, the crowd that attended is always fun to play with. Heh on the way home I was following a dark grey Toyota Camry briefly and thought it was Stephen’s car so I made some hand gestures to it from the rear, unfortunately when I passed it I noticed the driver was a woman! LOL oops! 😉

Saturday in the morning we did some banking, grocery shopping and played with little B till he went down for a nap, then I decided to take a nap as well. Mid afternoon I left for another airsoft game and it was great! While I can’t talk about the venue (lol told the host I wouldn’t), I had a lot of fun and this place is absolutely awesome. We played a variety of games and lol I absolutely love having an IR designator (eye safe power levels) as it makes aiming with the PVS-14 much easier. Move the dot over the target and fire, thanks to that little piece of equipment I was making first shot kills at over 100′ successfully!

I was able to hit people’s feet under a big rig at around 70′ with the NV/IR laser combo and hitting the top third of someone’s head (it’s the only thing I saw) at around the same distance. LOL no one said fighting had to be fair right…

Sunday was my first true father’s day as last year Brandon was with Maggie in China and I really enjoyed it. He’s such a good boy and I certainly felt very fortunate to have what I have in my life. In the afternoon we went to my folks place to help them move some furniture around as they’re putting hard wood floor in one of the living rooms and re-carpeting the upstairs bedrooms.

Brandon was a bit fussy but he put on a cute show for everyone and I know my grandmother loved it. 🙂

All in all a great weekend, back to the daily grind now.

Colin is a happy man! =D

I have to say house hunting was fun but it’s also stressful at the same time and I’m glad this weekend I didn’t have to look anymore. 🙂 Instead I planned to do nothing, which is exactly what I like to do. 😉

On Friday we went to my folks place to pick up Brandon’s birth certificate (we moved a bunch of things there to declutter our house when we were staging) and decided to take my folks out for dinner. On the way to the restaurant, we all went for a drive by my new home and man I have to say I absolutely love the neighborhood. It’s so scenic, there are some crappy apartments on the main streets but once inside it’s very nice. I can’t wait, I hope that next time I’m around I can take some pictures…

Saturday I reconfigured my 6094 vest and put a couple of grenade pouches upside down as I find it’s easier to access those pouches that way. I guess I’ll find out next week when I go play airsoft at the new urban facility we’re hosting Rhino at. 🙂

I also swapped out the front shingles for some real Tactical Tailor shingles in CB, nothing beats real gear. Right now I’m still running a repro 6094 vest but I’ll definitely get a real LBT 6094a soon as it seems wrong that I’m running PTWs, a real ops-core helmet, a PVS-14 and using a repro vest… Ugh talking to Bray earlier in the week is bad, now I’m considering a new mounting system for my NV, to replace the J arm / rhino arm combination with something a bit more stable. Too bad it’s so expensive. 🙁

Spent a lot of time with the boy too and man Brandon is just so much fun, he’s always happy and it certainly makes looking after him easier.

>

Hehe he’s a good boy. Life is good and yeah I’m a lucky man as I have it all!

Busy week…

So the lady in the VW called me Friday night to talk and it would have been funny if the whole situation weren’t so sad… The first thing I told her was the deal I’m offering is the only one available, basically as I outlined below as long as she doesn’t fight the insurance claim, I’ll call the cops to tell them that we worked things out. Initially she complained I even went to insurnace saying I should have talked to her first but lol how could I do that when she took off… Later she asked me if I could bring it to a body shop she knows, I declined and told her I could only deal with ones that were approved by my insurance company. Lastly she told me if there is to be any communique that I text her cell phone before calling, she doesn’t want her husband to find out.

Saturday Mark showed Maggie & I (my dad also tagged along) 9 houses starting from Steeles & Don Mills going all the way down to the Beaches area. Of the nine, there were a few I liked though the one I really like, Maggie thinks is too small. We liked the houses we saw along the Bloor line as it would cut my commute time to like 20 minutes each way (which is awesome) but those places were even smaller. We’re keeping a few of those as backup for now. Nothing though really “wowed” me so I’m considering continuing the search but frankly time is getting tight and I’ll have to make a decision soon. There are 4 other houses in the Fairview mall area that I’d like to see and will try to arrange with Mark for tomorrow after work.

Today I didn’t do too much, went to Gymboree with Brandon and there are way too many people there. They should limit kids who participate to 2 adults maximum, when grand parents & siblings come (who are older) the play area gets full very fast.

Earlier last week I was bad and bought a friend’s 2012 Systema CQBR SCK PTW (with hopup, motor mods & Colt engraved receiver)… I really shouldn’t have but it was an excellent price and I gave in to temptation. Since I already have a CQBR upper that I’m happy with, I traded the new one (which had a real fancy Daniel Defense rail & a real vltor flip up sight) with Jason’s M4 upper, put a RIS on it and now it looks like a regular M4, which is exactly what I like. 😉 Thanks to Mario for the pistol grip too, the one I got was um ugly.

Don’t know if I posted it earlier but I sold my old 2007 SCK PTW a few weeks back and was really missing having 2 PTWs so now I have a backup again in case one goes down! I guess I’ll make the new 2012 lower as my primary and swap the uppers as needed.

Mmm plain looking but I like my guns to look utilitarian rather than all “riced up”. Sigh if I only had time to play, oh well June is right around the corner. 🙂

Run!!!

So my long weekend started on Friday, every long weekend I get an extra day off from my company. 😉

Anyway I took Brandon in for a hearing test and man was that sound proof room scary! I wish I could have taken a picture but the room was maybe 4×4′ in size and for some reason some of the steel mesh was rusty which gave the box a very creepy feel. To make matters worse, there were three toys with drums which move and is suppose to attract the attention of the kid and boy were those toys scary! Reminds me of a horror movie where when the toy is drumming, you know someone is going to die lol.

Brandon was very scared and struggling the whole time, I felt so bad because he was crying very hard and I could feel his heart pumping fast. 🙁 The good news is he reacted to all the toys and it looks like his hearing is ok. I guess he’s just going to be a late talker, he says a few words but he should be farther ahead right now.

On Saturday I wanted to take things easy because I had an airsoft game to attend in the afternoon so we just went out for an early lunch. Stephen picked me up at around 4:30PM and we were off to Flag Raiders.

So it was a terminator night game and Chris broke up the attendees into small groups so they could run around the field scavenging for the objectives that were placed there prior to the game. Teams would start off with no technology and would need to trade in the items for tech upgrades (lights, NV, etc) and it certainly made for an interesting night. I started the game with just Stephen and Jeremy and frankly it was quite difficult to find anything due to the darkness… It’s alright though we survived and eventually got teched up to use NV. 🙂 On the restart I was put into a team of 5 and we were a lot more successful finding and securing the objectives as there was plenty of firepower to go around.

Later we decided to “hunt” the terminator and man he was hard to kill! We were able to shoot him all over and still couldn’t find his kill switch, good for Jeremy (another one) though he was a good sport!

Ugh I rented out the ARES CQBR to another player and he tripped and fell on it snapping the buffer tube right off. Sigh it’s alright, it was an accident so I’m not upset and am glad that the guy didn’t hurt himself.

Today we didn’t do too much, went out for for a Pho lunch and to get little B’s haircut. It was pretty sad to watch him during the trim as he was crying quite hard. The haircut didn’t even turn out that well but I guess it’s hard when he doesn’t cooperate.

There were also viewings every day so far this long weekend (and another tomorrow) but nothing solid yet… I hope the house sells soon, definitely time to move on.

Going on the market! =D

On Friday Mark my real estate agent came over to take some pictures of my house and to sort out the paper work and my house will officially be on the market tomorrow. It’s an exciting time and I hope it sells quickly, this house has been good to us but it’s time for us to move on now…

Saturday I hosted an airsoft game at Flag Raiders and it was fun. It was intended to be a low key simple skirmish for novice players but lol it was mainly vets that came out. Not that I blame them, the weather was absolutely beautiful and overall it seemed people enjoyed themselves which is good. I did bitch out this one guy after lunch (the FR rot dogs didn’t help my illness), he had the nerve to tell me to “do anything, elimination to get moving” while I was waiting for people to gather! Needless to say I told that guy off and he can do whatever the hell he likes at his game. At my games I do what I want.

After the game I went to Douglas’ place for a birthday BBQ and it was fun! It was the first time I went to his new home, the interior is a bit dated but who cares it’s better than a condo right. 😉

Sunday we didn’t do too much. I cleaned the house further and when Brandon went down for his afternoon nap I went to Home Depot to buy some paint to touch up a few places. Dropped by my folks place in the mid afternoon to rifle through a few boxes I have stored there then came home.

Busy but fun weekend, too bad the rain and cooler weather comes back tomorrow… At least I’m off, Maggie and I both booked the day off as we have to take the little guy to see the doctor in the morning woo.

Operation Rhino Website posted

Chris has put a lot of effort in his marquee game and set up a swanky website to track and manage things and the game will be held during the last weekend of July. The guys and I will be running as a squad, it’s too bad so many of my boys are working as game control but it’ll be fun none the less.

No helicopters this year but an awesome new venue and I’m really excited to check things out. 🙂 We own the night and I can’t wait to play the game! 😀

Fort Drum NY for me?

So a bunch of the guys are organizing to hit the Operation Blacksheep at Fort Drum NY and oh man I’d absolutely love to go! Trying to work out the details with Maggie and to my surprise she didn’t object as much as I thought she would so there’s a chance. 😉

Doesn’t it look awesome?!? The Youtube video is from 2010’s game and yeah a field like that makes Picton feel like a playground. It’s going to be complicated though because the team is hosting Op: Rhino a few weeks later so Maggie might not be happy with me gone two weekends in such close proximity. I’ll figure something to smooth it out hopefully. 🙂
