Productive weekend!

Well I certainly had a productive weekend. 😀 As I mentioned to a few friends, eventually I want to turn my M249 Para into a MK46 mod 0 (well as close as I can get, can never remove a few things) and it’s going well. I removed the bipod and put in its place a fore grip and it’s definitely easier to wield now. Next piece to change is the barrel though I’m still debating if I should keep the sliding para stock as I like that look more.

Heh I think it looks awesome, I wonder if those replica Elcan sights are any good…

Saturday night the family and I went to an impromptu family gathering for my grand mother at my parents house. Apparently she’s having difficulty sleeping these days and nothing cheers her up like seeing and playing with her great grand son. 🙂 To see her her smile and hear her laugh when she holding him just warms your heart…

Finally let’s see today I finally finished Assassin’s Creed 2, the game is definitely better than the first one though along the way I gave myself a really bad headache lol… I sometimes get motion sickness when I’m playing games but that’s nothing a nap can’t fix! 😀 Anyway I just started the third installment, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and it’s turning out to be a pretty good game too so I’m happy. 🙂 Definitely a fun series, if you have a PS3 it’s definitely something you should check out!

Toronto Airsoft Convention 2011

Yesterday the team hosted a table at the Toronto Airsoft Convention 2011 (TAC11) at FACT and it was fun. I think this was the fourth or fifth time we’ve done this and every year I have a blast. Much of the team volunteered to help Brian run things and they did a great job. Myself I spent most of the day at our table talking to newbs about guns, gear and general airsoft tidbits, which I hope will help them with their airsoft careers. A bit later in the day a guy who hosts his own Youtube channel Wolf’s Den got this girl to interview me about airsoft and that was fun. LOL I don’t know why she was wearing what she was but whatever I won’t complain haha and best of all Maggie thinks it’s funny. 🙂

Phil had also set up a booth serving food, what a great idea that was as there aren’t any places to eat close by. The newbs loved looking through Chris’ ACOG which was cowitnessed with his PVS-14 NVS as well as checking out my NVG setup. Brayden brought down his PVS-14 as well so we had three gen 3 mil spec night vision goggle/scopes on the table, man that is sweet! All the guns garnered a lot of attention but definitely the A&K M249 Para and A&K M60E4 were the stars of our table.

I didn’t buy too many things, I picked up my yearly supply of BBs, a used Pantac Paca vest in black and a really nice Condor soft shell jacket in coyote tan. Bernie also gave me a set of custom grips (with our new team logo etched into them) for my TM MEU and my god are they cool! 😀

All in all another great convention and I already look forward to next year’s event. If you live in the Southern Ontario region and are interested in airsoft, this is definitely something you have to attend!

Fun weekend!

Don’t you love those lazy weekends? I’m happy to report that I’ve finally finished Assassin’s Creed, the game is not super long but I stopped playing when Maggie’s dad was here and took it up again this weekend. I enjoyed the game but I can see why it only got a mediocre rating as it does get repetitive. The most frustrating part of the game for me definitely had to be when I confronted Robert de Sable for the last time and had to fight those 10 Templars at the same time, ugh must have died 20 times at least! They’re not hard to fight but when you’re totally surrounded and confined to a small area, it was quite difficult.

Yesterday I started playing Assassin’s Creed II and yeah that game faster and more fun than the first one. Oh if you’re planning on playing this series, make sure you start with the first one otherwise it’ll be confusing as you will not know the plot. This game takes off right where the first ends!

Oh I also spent a lot time playing with Brandon and it’s funny to watch him do these half push ups, look around then let his head fall to the mattress smiling along the way. 🙂 He’s a happy baby, we’re lucky.

Anyway yeah that’s what I did all weekend and it was great!

Got my old TM 1911 back!

A couple of years ago, to fund another project I sold my TM 1911 which was upgraded with a full Guarder Army metal kit and pretty much since that day, I’ve been kicking myself. Well the other day I was able to buy it back, and $75 cheaper than what I sold it for! The gun itself looks exactly like the day I sold it and it has been pretty much sitting in a box the whole time. I’m certainly happy as getting a full metal kit in Canada these days is very difficult and finding the exact model I’m looking has been near impossible.

Hehe to the left is my FMU TM MEU, the new/old FMU TM 1911 and a plastic TM 1911. I guess I can sell the latter now since I do not need two, anyway Colin is happy… 😀

JOTF-SOG 1st Outdoor Training Session

In May, the team and I will be playing a large mil sim and today we had our first outdoor training session.  We practiced CQB at the Belleville Craig Complex Hospital, while the May game will be a field game practicing CQB builds team relationships and dynamic.  At first the Task Force Battle Group (the platoon under my command) struggled with clearing rooms, angles and aggression but as the day progressed, the guys started to gel and did quite well.  As the “point of the spear”, TFBG suffered the most casualties with the last mission but then again we had the most of the engagements.  I think between the various teams on my side (AFO, TFBG & QRF) we’ll need better comms, that was pretty obvious at the end when I asked AFO to sweep the rooms on the left.  They did not advance as quickly as my guys and we got cut down by Jason who was in a good position.

Still the day went well and even though I didn’t fire many shots I still had a good time. 🙂

Heh in between missions we took a team picture. On March 26th I’ll be hosting a training session for the TFBG (though everyone is welcome) and we’ll practice section movement, radio comms & map reading/relaying coordinates.  Woo this will be something special for sure.  For the time being this post is private, after the game I’ll make all the posts public, don’t want op-for to read my thoughts. 😉

Tuesday Feb 22nd 2011 Edit: Chris took some video with his iPhone and uploaded to Youtube.

Yeah the facility truly is awesome! 😀

Busy busy weekend

On Friday I took Jorai to play his first indoor airsoft game at TTAC3 and well I certainly had fun. 🙂  I don’t think I got to shoot him that day but it’s alright it was great to play, I think before that the last time I played was at Brian’s FTF game back in November.

On Saturday we went to the Oriental Center at Sheppard and god knows where so I could pick up some airsoft parts to fix up the Masada while Maggie and her mom bought some other stuff.  Later in the day we went to my parents place to celebrate Chinese New Year with my dad’s family and that was fun too.  Heh as the newest addition to the family, Brandon is the star of the show and everyone wants to hold him or play with him.  Good thing the kid is not afraid of strangers and man I’m very fortunate that he’s so well behaved when we go out!

Maggie’s mom certainly had a lot of fun playing with my dad’s Xbox Kinnect. 😉

Today we went to visit Cindy and her husband (whom I keep forgetting his name) to meet their son Leon who was born about 6 weeks ago.  LOL man I remember when Brandon was that small!

Too bad when we got there Leon was tired but that’s alright I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of him in the future.

New complete upper!

My PTW upper came last Friday but I needed a few pieces to complete a M4 upper and they came today. 😉  Anyway here it is in all its glory!

Isn’t it cool?  I can swap the upper receiver between CQBR and M4 length in like 10 seconds!  I also got a red cylinder (it was cheap) but I’m afraid it shoots way too hot to use…  505 fps with the CQB barrel and 540 fps with the M4 length barrel.  Oh well in any case Colin is happy though I’m now considering changing the M4 upper receiver into a M16 length. 😀  We’ll see I guess.

Ahh hell

So last night I purchased another upper receiver for my Systema PTW as this will allow me to change the configuration of my gun from rifle or carbine to CQBR in like 10 seconds. Anyway after taking my gun apart, I notice this crack in my current upper receiver…

Sigh the crack goes all the way to the outer barrel.  I’m sure it compromises the integrity of the upper receiver so I better not fall on the gun again but I think I can use it like this for a while.  The delta ring holds the barrel in place in the receiver so that’s not going to move, if anything there just may a bit more play between the upper and lower (which may cause feeding problems, we’ll see I guess).  I’ll probably replace this down the line, too bad Systema uses soft metals.

8:09 PM Edit: I bought a used A&K Masada from ASC earlier in the week and here it is! 😀

It’s in rougher shape than I would have expected but that’s ok the externals are still solid.  Why anyone would get a sky blue PMag is beyond me, going to get some black PMags shortly to go with the thing.  Internally it’ll require a bit of work but that’s alright I’m up for the challenge!

Classic Army M15A4 RIS Sportline Review

In my search for the perfect loaner rifle, I’ve gone through a number of AEGs already and the latest candidate for the job is the Classic Army M15A4 RIS Sportline.  The gun was purchased from Halifax Airsoft it should suit my needs to a T. New players all love the M4/M16 platform, the crane stock supports a large battery (more on that later) and it’s cheap enough that I won’t cry if it breaks.

Classic Army’s Sportline series of guns are aimed at the entry level market and are suppose to compete with JG, DBoys and G&G’s Combat Machine brands just to name a few.  To compete the CA M15A4 RIS Sportline package comes with the gun (duh), a 300 round hi capacity magazine, two rail panels, foregrip, crane stock battery, a wall charger (throw this thing out, it’s a POS) and about 500 rounds of 0.2g BBs; which is pretty standard for entry level guns.

Probably to the first thing that airsofters will notice is that the CA M15A4 RIS Sportline comes equipped with a plastic body.  This was done to keep costs low enough to be competitive with the other Chinese manufacturers.  It feels pretty solid and there is no play between the upper and lower receiver but I wouldn’t want to fall on it.  Under the hood, you get a “standard” CA mechbox & components, its X series and previous Proline guns all come with a beefier upgraded mechbox and metal bodies (where applicable). The Classic Army M15A4 RIS Sportline weighs in at approximately 2 kg (4.4 lbs) which makes it pretty light compared to higher end guns but it’s on par with JG M4A1’s and G&G Combat Machine M4A1’s I’ve handled in the past.  According to my chrony the M15A4 RIS Sportline shoots ~345 fps with 0.2g BBs.

Now that we know the basics, here’s what I liked about the CA M15A4 RIS Sportline.  Moving to the back, I absolutely love the fact that CA equipped the gun with a large crane stock.  It might not be the same size as a real crane stock but the one that comes with the gun can support a large battery instead of a mini.  Note the battery that came with my gun is not the original, retailer must have swapped it out.

There is also a new end cap design for the CA crane stock, instead of taking the whole stock off when you want to charge or remove the battery, simply push in the two clips and the end cap pops right off.  That allows you to slide a battery in and out very easily, and allows you to have a battery installed and have the stock fully retracted, something that’s usually impossible with most AEGs with a crane stock.  Finally Classic Army uses corded wire (like telephone handset to receiver wire) in the buffer tube which when stretched and released, pulls the wire safely back into the buffer tube.  The problem is though that the wire is too thick but I’ll get to that in a few minutes.

I’m happy to report that the top rail of the Classic Army RIS lines up with the top of the receiver.  In the past that has been an issue and complaint amongst CA users.  The delta ring the M15A4 RIS Sportline is equipped with is nice and stiff, as stiff as the one on my PTW which means whatever handguard you decide to install will be secure.

Now onto the bad and there are some issues with the Classic Army M15A4 RIS Sportline.  My biggest gripes have to do with the front end of the gun.  I know the gun is aimed at the entry level market but I was still disappointed to see that CA equipped the thing with a two piece barrel.  JG, Echo 1 and G&G all use multi piece barrels for their entry level M4s but I was hoping for CA to do better.  The front sight is removeable (unlike with the G&G Combat Machine M4A1) but if you change the barrel you’ll want a new front sight anyway because the stock one is held in place by only a grub screw. Next it would have been nice if CA equipped its pistol grips with a brass insert for the screws so it doesn’t strip.

Stripping the CA M15A4 RIS Sportline down is exactly the same as with its X series of AEGs.  Pop out the front pin and slide the upper receiver off the mechbox.  Just make sure you have the magazine out of the mag well first. 😉  With the upper removed you can slide out the plastic hopup unit and 6.08mm aluminum inner barrel which is 363mm in length.

To remove the mechbox from the lower receiver, first you’ll have to remove the magazine catch, the mechbox pin, the rear pin, pistol grip and then buffer screw and that’s err where we ran into problems… yet again if you remember from my G&G Combat Machine review. This time the issue was with the wiring CA decided to use, it was simply too thick for me to get a screw driver back there to remove the buffer screw. I tried stretching the wire as far as it would go and I also tried putting the screwdriver down the middle. I guess when the gun gives me trouble, I’ll have to rewire the AEG as I’ll probably have to cut the wires to get the buffer tube off.

Luckily I’ve worked on two CA Sportline AEGs in the past so even though I didn’t get into this gun, I can still tell you about the internals.  The gears are said to be made of zinc alloy, whether it is or not I cannot confirm but they look and have a similar weight to stock TM gears.  I do not know what the mechbox shell is made of but it is not as soft as a stock TM mechbox.  It’s not as heavy as an upgraded CA mechbox so I guess the one that comes with the Sportline sits somewhere in the middle in terms of durability.  Yes I know that’s a very imprecise science but that’s all I got. 😉

It’s difficult to say how good the piston is, it looks and feels like well an AEG piston.  The piston head is ventilated and there is a plastic spring guide. Lastly the gun comes installed with plastic bushings.  I definitely would have preferred to see metal bushings as that would greatly increase the gun’s durability but at its designed power level, plastic bushings will do the job ok. There is one thing more I would like to say about the Classic Army internals, one thing tweakers will definitely appreciate is that when you open the mechbox everything (other than the spring and spring guide) stay in place.  I hate how the anti reverse latch or trigger pop out at first opportunity with the other Chinese manufacturers, that drives me up the wall!

CA M15A4 RIS Sportline shown with my Systema M4A1 PTW MAX

So there you have it the Classic Army CA M15A4 RIS Sportline is a decent rifle for the price (differs depending where you live) and it’s probably something that would appeal more to novice airsofters who are trying our wonderful hobby out.  Hardcore gamers looking for a primary might want to get something that’s full metal but if you’re like me and want a loaner, then this will do too.  Having said that I also would not have any problems using this rifle on the field should something happen to my PTW.

So I guess that’s it for now, when I do finally get the mechbox open of if there is a failure I will update this post but I plan to run this gun pretty much stock for as long as I can.  Let’s see how long it’ll last. 😉
