ICS MP5A4 Preview

Sorry for the lack of updates, between work and events that I must attend during this holiday season there hasn’t been much time to blogging. On Friday I came home to be greeted by a Canada Post package notice, it’s a crock because my condo has a 24 hour security guard and they accept packages. My mailman doesn’t like delivering big packages and every time something large arrives, I have to pick it up from the post office.

Anyway this morning I dropped by the post office to pick up the broken ICS MP5A4 AEG. It’s a fixer upper and for $85 I certainly wasn’t expecting much. Unfortunately it wouldn’t fire so I couldn’t test the gun’s stock power, there was a jam in the hopup like what Mark’s MP5 was suffering from.

MP5.jpg
Note the low cap TM Mag and G&P Flashlight foregrip did not come with the package.

It looks like the previous owner let the gun sit for quite some time after it broke because the thing was covered in thick dust. Oh well in any case the two parts that hold the cocking tube in place with the upper receiver broke off, here’s a quick picture of the damage.

Crack2.jpgCrack11.jpg

It’s a common problem with MP5/G3 style AEGs no matter the brand although it doesn’t help that ICS uses low quality metal for its bodies. While I do have a stronger CA MP5 upper receiver handy, the ICS pistol grip is proprietary and is not compatible with the CA body. Not a problem though since I already have a TM lower part coming in the mail. 😉

Usually MP5’s are a pain to work on because you have to disassemble the entire gun to get to the mechbox but not with the ICS design. It allows for a quick take down which is convenient, remove the stock undo one connector screw and the pistol grip with the mechbox slides right out. 🙂

Mechbox.jpgInternals.jpg

I always thought ICS used reinforced parts with its guns but the mechbox is as flimsy as the stock TM shell and will no doubt crack in the future. ICS does almost an exact copy of TM’s version 2 mechbox design, from the nylon bushings to the plastic spring guide and the way the stock spring attaches to the piston. Upon closer inspection the gears do look reinforced and have substantially more weight than stock TM gears. I guess time will tell whether they hold up or not.

Gears.jpg

The entire gearbox was torn down and rebuilt, I added metal bushings and a Guarder SP90 spring to the mix. I would also like to replace the plastic spring guide with a metal one and swap out the piston/piston head but I don’t have those parts handy so it’ll have to wait. The gun uses an ICS Turbo 2000 motor and it sounds awful. Even after adjusting the height of the motor the gun still squeals and is very loud, I’m definitely going to swap that thing out soon.

In the mean time the ICS MP5A4 has been put back together using the broken body. There’s enough friction between the upper receiver and cocking tube that the two pieces will stay in place (at least if you don’t yank it off). When the TM pistol grip comes in next week, the body will be replaced and the gun will be good as new. 🙂 At the moment the gun is firing a consistent 315 fps and for indoor use that’s fine. I may upgrade it further when the 2007 outdoor season starts to take off but we’ll worry about that then.

Ahh it’s been a relaxing Saturday doing what I love best tweaking my airsoft guns… 🙂

Too many sheppards, too little sheep

Mark and I went to TTAC3 last night for some year end CQB action and man there were a lot of people. 22 in fact and we were split into two even teams. The game was simple enough, it was a force on force confrontation where you have to capture the enemies base without losing your own. Right from the get go my team was very disorganized and overall we were continually slaughtered the entire night.

I volunteered to play defense a few times and every time I was either shot from the side or back because my “teammates” didn’t cover the flank or their angles even though they said they would. The most frustrating point of the game was when I was on the attacking team. I said I’d run point (because no one else would) then four other people were to stack up behind me. When Mark (who was giving cover fire) gave us the green light, we’d go and storm the enemy base. When the game started I got into position but none of the other four guys were behind me. I even yelled “Where’s my attack team!?” but they all went their separate ways without informing me.

I have no qualms with those who like to do their own thing but I expect people to follow through on their words. My “radical” ideas were snuffed out early on so fine, I decided I’ll take orders instead. I covered all my angles and played pretty well with Mark and Frank as a two/three man team but us versus 11 defenders is suicide. In fact one game where Frank and I took over the enemy base, 7 of our teammates hung back till we yelled “CLEAR”.

Perhaps I’m taking airsoft too seriously after all I play it just for fun but damn last night was frustrating. Perhaps I’ll take control of the situation a bit more next time, newbies who think they know what’s best are bad leaders.

On a more pleasant note, Stephen showed me his new OD Eagle Cross Draw vest and man that thing is beautiful. Eagle is the real deal and it manufacturers equipment for the armed forces that serve in Afghanistan and Iraq, if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. I got to see Jason’s awesome CAW Revolver Grenade launcher, that thing can hold 6 shells and each of his shells holds 165 BBs. Potentially Jason can go through over 1000 rounds in a few seconds, simply crazy. I was his first CAW launcher kill too, I know I’m never going to live that down. 😉 Sorry no pics of the awesome thing because I forgot my camera.

Mark had a good night he got to game with his Aug and revolver. Heh the dude was pretty giddy throughout the night and played well. I wish I could say the same, I played alright but was frustrated by “management”. I worked briefly on Shawn’s M4 unfortunately he has a stripped spur gear which explains why he’s having problems. Odd since his gun is completely stock and should last longer than that. At least I got to fix one thing though Brian had a stuck valve in one of his P226 mags, I removed it and cycled the valve, now it works properly. 🙂

Merry Christmas to Everyone!

Christmas started early for Maggie and I, Mark and Charlene came by on Saturday night to give us our gifts. Charlene got me a RC car (thank god it wasn’t an SUV lol) and Mark got me a flexible flashlight tool. Heh I was busy playing with my stuff so I wasn’t paying attention to what they got Maggie. 😉 We gave Charlene a propane adapter however Mark’s MP5 RAS still hasn’t come in yet which is disappointing. Oh well I’ll look into that next week.

Last night we went to my parents place, nothing big it’s almost a preview of what’s to come tonight when we go over again. 😉 My dad was telling me earlier about how Simba has changed physically after being fixed and boy was I surprised! He’s totally puffed up now with much longer hair pretty much everywhere. He’s always acted like a kitten, now he looks like a big one again. 😀

Simba1.jpgSimba2.jpgMegan.jpg

After getting him fixed, he’s also been more tame which is a good thing. He’ll still play you till you’re tired, man now I want a cat. 🙂

We gave my mom and dad a salt/pepper shaker combo and my sisters each iPod Shuffles. My sisters didn’t give us anything but that’s ok, they’re studying and have no money. My parents gave Maggie and I a bit of money although I wish they didn’t. 😉

PS3.jpg

Heh my mom gave my dad a Playstation 3 Premium version for Christmas, isn’t that cool? We spent the night Resistance: Fall of Man (well mainly Megan and I) and it was fun. The graphics was definitely better than the previous console generation and the shooter that we played was also fun. They also rented Ridge Racer 7 however that game is pretty lousy. Caught up in the drifting fad, that’s the whole point of the game and it’s very unrealistic. Oh well it’s a good thing that my dad rented it and on not bought it… Heh with a PS3, I think I’ll visit my parents more often. 😉 I’d love to get one but none is available anywhere and I’m not desperate enough to buy it off eBay.

Great night and I get to do it again tonight when I get to see everyone on my dad’s side of the family.

Dimsum Saturday

Went out for dimsum today with Maggie and it’s awesome. I love it so much, I could eat dimsum everyday and not get bored. 😀

Dimsum.jpg

Anyway after Maggie and I did some last minute shopping, nothing big and we didn’t spend too much time walking around. It’s a good thing because the crowds were terrible, haha it reminded me of when I was in China earlier in the year. On the way home, the TTC suffered a power outage at College station and we were stuck at Dundas for about 20 minutes. As we were getting ready to get off to walk to Bloor the track level power came back on.

Train.jpg

Maggie was playing with her Nintendo DS Lite but I had nothing to do, left the PSP in my backpack. Oh well tomorrow I will do nothing which is exactly what I enjoy on a Sunday. 😉

Xmas dinner with friends and some airsoft action

My Friday was certainly very relaxing. Started the holiday weekend a day early so I lounged about at home doing nothing (exactly what I like) for the most part. For dinner I meet up with the two Mikes and we went for sushi. It was fun, I miss those guys and wish we hung out more often. I tried to talk them into playing airsoft with me but it was a no go… I ate too much sushi and felt bloated the rest of the night which was no a good thing especially if I’m going to be running around. Oh thanks for the gift Mike D, it wasn’t necessary. 🙂

At around 8:45PM I got to TTAC3 for a quick CQB session, I haven’t played for two weeks and was itching to shoot someone. I mentioned to Jason that I was interested in getting a shotgun in the future and he was kind enough to let me try his out. I was obviously green with that weapon and my positioning was poor, I got shot in the hands quite a few times the first few games which is a sign the shotgun and my hands were sticking out of cover.

After playing with the shotgun I’ve decided I’ll pick one up next year. In a force on force situation it’s not the best weapon since the rate of fire is slow (it covers a larger area though because it fires 3 BBs at a time). I can see how it would be useful in a team entry scenario though. There the first shot is most important and covering a larger area gives you a better chance at hitting your opponent.

The TM G36C was downgraded to shoot ~340 fps (CQB muzzle velocities are 350 fps max) but I decided against using it since my mask got in the way of the sights. I think I’ll put the old spring back in (~380 fps) and retire the gun for the winter. The rest of the night I stuck things out (as usual) with my Hi Capa 5.1. I didn’t play particularly well but it was fun none the less. 🙂 Heh I didn’t get shot by any grenades this time around and was able to give Jason a few nice shots from my pistol. 😉

After conversing for about half a year about, I was able to meet Stephen for a first time which was nice. Heh I could tell he was excited to play his first game and for the most part the dude played pretty well. Being a novice, his angles were not the best but that comes with time and he didn’t make any glaring mistakes. Heh if there’s one lesson to be learnt it’s that you have to fire for affect, you’re not trying to be a jerk about things but keep shooting till the person verbally or physically indicates that they have been hit. It’s just the easiest thing to do and doesn’t leave any doubts about what happened. After the game he was kind enough to give me a ride home, it’s on the way and I have nothing against carpooling. It was a good thing he didn’t drive a SUV though, if he had, I wouldn’t have been able to accept his kind offer.

Heh apparently my blog is popular among airsofters and Stephen is the 6th player this year whom I’ve talked to online first before meeting at a game. 🙂

Don posted a few pictures from the Wasaga game that we played on Dec 10th (he mislabeled the album and said Dec 5th) and the only one I was in was this one.

Mercs ruled that day, everyone who played that game agreed. 😉

A tale of two MP5s

Mark dropped his MP5 on Sunday for me to look at, it’s been having a feeding problem since pretty much the day I sold it to him (although it never happened to me). He’s not too bothered by it but it sure does bug the hell out of me.

Anyway after a bit of tinkering I think I’ve isolated the issue to the gun’s hopup mechanism. I noticed that the plastic lever that holds the hopup in place no longer works and the hopup and barrel get separated by a few millimeters. A quick mod with electrical tape solved that issue and now the gun fires just fine on full auto, it doesn’t jam even one shot.

MP5_Hop.jpg

It might be crude but it works quite well. 😉 I borrowed the idea from Mark who uses some electrical tape to secure another area. Unfortunately the gun still jams up on semi and solving that issue will be much harder.

The issue is the BB gets stuck on something inside the hopup unit and requires a lot of force to push it through. It’s as if the diameter of the BB is too large all of a sudden… I don’t have a picture of that right now but will take one later. I’m dropping by ASC Armoury tonight perhaps Miles or Carl will have some suggestions, they always have a wealth of information.

If you have any suggestions, I’m all ears.

Dec 20th edit: Oh for any gunsmiths out there, I just realized that the screws for the hopup were installed the wrong way. In any case they’re stripped if I couldn’t tell it was backwards. Talked to Carl and Bartek yesterday at ASC and they gave me some ideas but unfortunately none of them panned out. I guess I’ll have to figure this one out myself, when I do I’ll post the fix.

ICS MP5A4 incoming!

Heh before my parents get mad at me THIS GUN ONLY COST ME $85! Heh there is a catch the part on the metal receiver that holes the cocking tube back is broken but replacing that is easy and cheap. 😉

71860158.jpg71860161.jpg

Aside from the broken receiver the gun looks to be in excellent shape. Maggie is not pleased that I picked up another AEG but says the price is right. 😀 I’ll be getting it in later in the week, will take pictures of the thing then.

Relaxing

Those of you who frequent my blog know that I don’t talk about my work and that’s not about to change. Just wanted to mention that the company party on Friday night was fun. Enough about that though… 😉

On Saturday I didn’t really do anything during the day, Maggie was busy studying so worked a bit on my blog. Added 9 more header pictures to the mix which hopefully freshens things up. 🙂 Also updated the info on my airsoft page although I think I might overhaul that page completely a bit later because there’s more to the hobby than the guns.

In the evening we went out for dinner with Mark and Charlene and that was a lot of fun. Unfortunately Congee Wong at Finch and Leslie lost our reservation so we headed up North to a greasy spoon at Hwy 7 and Bayview. Hehe it was funny to watch Mark stab at the food with chopsticks although I wasn’t much better dropping a wonton into my noodle soup and splashing everywhere. 😉

Mark.jpgSpot.jpgFood.jpg

Yum, it was good. 🙂 Sunday is shaping up to be pretty relaxing too, just the way I like it. Mark might drop off his MP5 later for me to look at, he’s been having a feeding issue pretty much all season. Says it doesn’t bother him much but it sure does bug the hell out of me especially since it’s my old gun and I never had any of these problems.

I guess we’ll see how things go today…

Here’s how I spent my weekend…

Well I certainly hope you had a good wknd because I did. 😉 Friday night I hit TTAC3 with Mike and we played a very interesting “Bank scenario”. It was fun but I though the ETF was suppose to keep the hostages alive, not shoot them down first. LOL it seemed like the good guys always killed the hostages to get to the robbers.

It was a special occasion, it was Paul’s son’s bday party and we all certainly gave him a lesson on the ins and outs of airsoft. 😉 Just kidding the dude played pretty well for his first airsoft game, he was a bit timid but that’s normal for newbies.

Personally I didn’t play very well on Friday but was rather impressed with how well Mike performed. No real stories because well… I can’t seem to remember them right now.

On Saturday I wanted to go for dimsum with the wife but Maggie had to study for CGA exams so we just stayed home. Mark came by later in the day to pick up his share of BBs and a safety lever for his Hi Capa 5.1. Heh when Mark saw the MG36, he was definitely impressed, went as far as extending the bipod and then laid on the ground in the prone position lol! Heh I told Maggie that all men are big kids. 😀

After Mark sent over some pics of his Hi Capa 5.1 and it’s quite pretty…

Mark_Guns1.jpgMark_Guns2.jpg

It’s so shiny that it’s almost a girl’s gun haha. Anyway I have to say the safety lever matches the slide, he’s thinking about adding a silver trigger as well. The rest of the day was spent tweaking my AEGs, loading up mags and prepping my gear for Sunday’s field game.

Wasaga Airsoft game on Sunday

Sunday morning I met up with Douglas and we headed out to Wasaga Paintball. Yes it’s a paintball field but with 10cm of snow on the ground paintballers play speedball inside so the airsofters had the entire field to ourselves. 😀 It’s a good thing I remembered how to get there from the last time because Google Maps got the directions all wrong.

We arrived shortly after 10AM and while waiting for more people to show up, a bunch of us played a quick game of attack and defend. The first game I played very poorly and was take out rather early (didn’t cover my angles properly). The second game was different, I not only shot two people when I found out that there was only one attacker left, I charged the field and was able to mercy Sean (a guy I play with regularly at TTAC3). 😀 Haha he’ll hear about that one for quite some time, after I mentioned I should have shot him, bah who needs mercy right? 😉

The actual game broke the players down into three teams, CADPAT, Flecktarn/Woodland and the mercenaries (ACU, white, black and multicam). As mercenaries we can be hired by either team for a short period of time, helping either side to reach their objectives. The missions between the two official sides during the day included capturing/rescuing the downed CADPAT pilot, securing the two loose nuclear missiles and taking recon pictures of various sites and base facilities with the field camera. As mercenaries, our job was to simply make as much money as we can (the two official teams had monopoly money to pay us with).

When the game started we were the first to reach the downed pilot, after finding him we were making our way back to our base when we bumped into the CADPAT team. Instead of engaging we sold the pilot back to his team and had CADPAT cover our retreat from the area in case Flecktarn attacked.

On the way back to our base we ran into the Flecktarn captain and another member carrying a missile. We were supposed to escort them to their base but along the Flecktarn captain was taken out by CADPAT fire so we ran for the hills. Realizing that the Flecktarn guys didn’t pay us yet, we took out the lone Flecktarn guy carrying the missile and took it back to our base.

We hid the missile in the snow leaving a couple of fins sticking out. It wasn’t in our objectives to capture one so we figure if CADPAT or Flecktarn happen to come across it, they could take it.

A couple of our guys needed to go back to the staging area to peel off a few layers and put some defogger onto their goggles, on the way back we walked by the CADPAT team base. Those who were ready to play strolled into the CADPAT base and we started a conversation. CADPAT wanted our help to assault the Flecktarn base, we said ok but needed to wait for two of our members to return (we’re not going to start a fight handicapped). In the mean time, one of our guys suggested to the CADPAT team to go ahead and scout Flecktarn’s position. Once they found them to radio back and we’d come in as support.

To our surprise the CADPAT team agreed and split their team up in half, one the scouting party, the other for base defense. There was only one problem with this plan, CADPAT had left without paying us first. 😉 With only three defenders to the six mercs, we decided to take their team out and steal the second nuclear missile. 😀 Of course going through things casually we talked and bs’ed for close to half an hour so the remaining CADPAT personnel would let their guard down. One was stationed at the front of the base, another (the medic) was near the rear and there was a gunner in the tower. Walking around we could not see the missile anywhere so we figured it’d be in the tower however that’s a difficult position to assault.

One of us was talking to the front guard, another was able to strike up a conversation with the tower guard while I took position to draw fire however the medic (Sean) wouldn’t let any of us to get close. With that in mind, it was important for the rest of the mercs to concentrate their fire towards him because he was able to freely move around. On the sound of go we executed the plan perfectly and was able to take them all out. Haha Sean was cursing that he knew that was going to happen… 😀 Anyway since they were dead they had to wait for their other guys to return before they could respawn.

On our way back to our base we came upon two CADPAT team members and was able to capture their captain. Walking back to our base we decided to deal with the CADPAT captain since he had money. After the deal we let him go and allowed him to take back the missile. The deal was we would protect him up to the top of the hill unfortunately for Mario, Flecktarn was on their way to our base to set up a deal. We told those guys that they couldn’t attack Mario till he got past the top of the hill so they obviously waited then captured him. Haha we felt pretty bad for the dude but so goes the way of the game. 😉

That was the highlight of the team play for me, after lunch we joined up with Flecktarn again to attack CADPAT, we outnumbered them 2:1 but CADPAT had a very easy to defend area and was able to repel our best attempt. After screwing around for a little bit longer, everyone was pretty tired and we played one game straight team elimination, digital vs analog. Running along side with Jason, we were able to flank the digital side while the other analog guys provided a frontal attack. I was able to take out Alan (ACU) along with three of my former merc teammates also wearing ACU. Hehe the looks on their face was priceless, they all told me I friendly fired on them but I would just yell back that I was on the analog side. 😉 Multicam uses analog features so it’s considered an analog design.

I didn’t get to play much with Douglas, he was on the Flecktarn/Woodland side but from what I heard he played well. I was very happy with how the MG36 performed, it would dry fire probably once every 4-6 shots but that wasn’t a large handicap and no guns broke, woo!

Doug_Me.jpg

Anyway the day ended at around 4:30PM and when I got home I simply crashed because I was exhausted. I absolutely loved the game and would like to thank tattooedfreak_1 such an awesome time. I’m sure my body will be sore for the next few days but I’ll be ready to hit TTAC3 on Friday. 😉

Dec 11 8:27PM Edit: Damn just remembered that the company party is on Friday… I guess that means no TTAC3 this week.
