July 4th fireworks from here?

On Friday I took Brandon for a walk on a trail on lake Ontario and we could see Americans celebrating the July 4th (on the 5th) holiday with fireworks!

The video was shot on my cell phone through my BNVD 1431s and it was very cool to see, we would have stayed longer to watch but the mosquitoes were out in force so that cut our walk short.

Like old times

As Brandon grows up we’re spending less and less time together but yesterday was a really nice day.  The boy and I (Maggie had to work) went to Edward Gardens to join Mike to take pictures of the bugs and it I had such a great time.  It felt like when he was younger and we’d walk through parks, I really enjoyed spending that time with him.

I know this quality time will be fewer and far between moving forward so I’ll take what I can get.

Working hard!

Yesterday afternoon I took Brandon to his BJJ grading and boy did they work the kids who were trying to get their next belt hard!  Brandon’s always sweaty but he was drenched after yesterday’s session and I’m proud to say he earned his grey/black belt.  Last grey belt, hopefully he can get a yellow before he turns 15 and needs to go into the adult belt system.

It’s great exercise and as always I’m very proud of my boy, well done Brandon!

The Liberals are always lying

This was a pretty funny read, the Liberals have been crying Conservatives are turning dental groups against their plan when they’ve done no such thing.

“There has been zero pressure, really, from the Conservatives on us in any kind of fashion that would result in the low uptake of dentists registering for the program,” said Dr. Robert Wolanski, president of the British Columbia Dental Association.
“The misinformation that has been provided has been provided almost solely by … the Liberal government and the NDP,” Wolanski said, of a program that was born out of the minority Liberals’ parliamentary alliance with the New Democrats.

The Liberals are always lying, that should be the default position when any Liberal politician talks.  The Conservatives would probably not be any better but it’s the Liberals who have been in power for 9 years and well I’ll let you be the judge if you were better in 2015 when Harper was in charge (and I don’t even like Harper) or Trudeau now.

Grade 8 graduation

Last night we went to Brandon’s grade 8 graduation (at the nearest high school due to space) and I can’t believe my little boy is so big already!  Sigh I’m totally not ready for him to go to high school but here we are…  The school gave out medals and patches to celebrate and made up enough categories that everyone got something but Brandon got honour roll, the math award (of course the Chinese kid lol), the academic achievement and some other stuff.

LOL he totally doesn’t know how to pose and I tell him all the time that he looks like a robot haha…  He was wearing my suit, a bit big on him but did the job.  School is over after next week and in Sept my little boy will start high school, myself I hated my high school years so I hope that it’s better for him.

I’m so damn lucky, Brandon is a great son and I’m very proud father.

Happy father’s day!

I’m alive and well, as I mentioned earlier I just don’t have much motivation to post stuff on my blog but today is a special day for me (and fathers out there) and I wanted to say I certainly feel very lucky. 🙂  I have the best wife and best son that one could ask for, thank you Maggie & Brandon for being awesome!

Busy weekend!

We certainly had a busy Victoria day weekend, started with Brandon having a friend sleep over Friday into Saturday.  The kids slept in the basement and Slinky was all over them, he loves guests.  After the friend left, Brandon and took the winter pool cover off and started the process of opening the pool…  I watched the company I used last year do it and it didn’t seem too hard so I figure I’d give it a shot, to be fair opening is much easier than closing, I think I’ll still get the other guys to close it for me as I don’t have a way to blow the water out of my circulation lines.

Sunday I took the family to Bonnechere caves and it was fun!  The drive there required us take local roads so I had a good time going there and back and the caves were definitely unique.  It was pretty warm outside, around 27C but inside it was maybe 15 degrees and very wet since limestone is porous.

Some parts of the cave were very narrow and I had a difficult time moving around with my pack on.  Should have used my camera sling instead and I should have put the wide angle lens on instead of my 24-70, ahh well.  Still it was a lot of fun, I’m not sure if I’d go again as it is a 3 hour drive 1 way but it was great to experience it with the family.

Today Brandon and I continued to open the pool, the water levels are high enough for us to start the pump, add some chlorine pucks to the water (there are lots of stupid bugs grr) and we’ll do some vacuuming out of leaves a bit later when the temperatures are lower.  The pool is green right now but by this time next week it’ll be blue and we can swim woo!

Amazing experiences

The sun ejected a few CMEs the Earth’s way last week and the first hit our planet on Friday and continued throughout the weekend.  Since it was clear, I took Brandon hunting for auroras and it was an amazing experience to s hare with him, to say we were successful is an understatement!

The first photo is of the sun, the suns pots on the right side of the picture, that’s where the storm erupted from.  Friday night the Kp index which gives you a rough idea at how significant the storm was at max, Kp9 and rated as a G5 geomagnetic storm (analogues to hurricane category ratings) and the auroras were so bright, you could see the greens, reds and purple colours with the naked eye!  Each photo is either a 2 or 4 second picture, absolutely wonderful!

Unfortunately Maggie had a badminton game early Saturday morning so she didn’t come with but yeah I was able to share this wonderful experience with the boy. 🙂

Obviously the last two photos have nothing to do with the auroras, that’s actually from a few weeks ago when we went to take pictures of the solar eclipse that came through, also shared that event with Brandon.  Definitely feel very fortunate that I can share these types of things with my boy and I hope that he remembers them forever! 🙂

What a stupid plan

Trudeau’s government is not known for well thought out ideas and this has got to be one of the stupider ones.

Ottawa has been promising to launch this program ever since it banned the sale and use of 1,500 models of firearms on May 1, 2020. The buyback plan has the support of the gun control movement but faces stiff opposition from hunters and shooters.

“This seems to be a situation in which the Liberals promised a lot, and maybe they promised too much,” said Boily.

The government had to go back to the drawing board after Canada Post refused to collect banned weapons at its post offices, citing security concerns.

Canada Post is refusing to comment on the matter but sources within the organization said many post offices have little security, with no alarm systems or surveillance cameras.

“Zero,” said a Canada Post employee when asked to describe security at his post office in a small municipality. “The government is crazy if it thinks we can do this safely.”

So the federal government want people to bring their guns and leave them at Canada Post offices, that sounds like a great target for organized crime to hit!  These guns were so dangerous that they had to be banned, yet the feds let owners sit on them for the next 4 years and then have 0 security at post offices.  Well thought out but of course it’s not about public safety, the last line in the article says it all, they need votes and they think this is what is going to save them.

Abortion, LGBT issues and guns, that’s what the Liberals are going to run the next election on because after 9 years they have nothing to show for their tenure.

2nd in command

A colleague of mine took a screenshot of Slinky on my lap during a conference call and hehe he’s so damn cute!

For some reason when Slinky hears the Microsoft teams call, he’ll come running from wherever he is in the house to jump on my lap. After it’s done he’ll leave, so funny! In this case I was giving him neck scratches and he enjoyed them very much lol.
