TAC14

This year Brian held the TAC14 convention at Ultimate Airsoft instead of TTAC3 and it was a big hit. Not only was there a ton of more space it allowed the team tables to reappear which is something I love. πŸ™‚ Unfortunately since I was infected with pink eye, I couldn’t make it but the guys put on a good show.

Hehe and Q brought out his new toy… πŸ˜‰

Yes it’s definitely very cool and we’ll take it out for the upcoming Nightfall 3 game in June. πŸ™‚ Eddy was impressed, lol he made a small claymore RC car a couple of years back so he can appreciate the level of difficulty…

Hopefully I’ll be good to go for next year as it looked like I missed a lot of fun.

Nice!

Stephen has had some bad luck with PTWs over his airsoft career and brought over his FCC 7.5″ Diplomat FTW for me to give a once over and well after around 2k rounds of dry firing it seems to be alright. The Achilles’ heel of FCC guns and parts has mainly been the lousy pinion gear, for some reason they made a batch out of really soft metals that strip easily. I know myself and the guys on the team have gone through enough of them but hey no one’s perfect I guess I mean Systema has had crappy motors for years.

FCC_7.5_Diplomat

I had an extra replica Aimpoint T1 micro so I gave it to Stephen and I think it looks pretty good on the Diplomat. Man is this thing super light, then again it doesn’t have a lot of crap on it I guess but yeah I can one hand the gun like a pistol! It’s the perfect size and weight for Maggie, if she ever decides to return to airsoft maybe I’ll get her one. Or at least a small 7.5″ upper as I have enough PTWs already. πŸ™‚

I’ll give it more of a torture test over the weekend and see how it stands up.

Mmm RS upper, another fun game and a new gun!

On Friday Qlong came by the house to drop off a real steel modded AR-15 upper for my PTW. I broke my Systema upper earlier in the week and was super stoked to get this thing, made of 7075 aluminum and designed for real guns, it should be able handle anything I throw at it!

IMG_7164IMG_7165IMG_7166

I don’t remember what brand Q said it was but who cares it’s a real AR-15 upper!!! πŸ˜€ Installed it last night and it fits the Systema lower like they were designed for each other.

Today I went to play another school game hosted by LT and it was great. This time it was a Catholic school that was closing down approximately at Vic Park & Danforth and man was it fun. The team decided to to go in mixed gear this time so I wore a black top with woodland pants. The games were good and I didn’t have a problem with anything though Garret did shoot me in the right ear and it drew quite a bit of blood.

20140222_153018

Heh it hurt like hell but at the same time I was happy he didn’t hit my Nacre QuietPro ear bud, that would break it and probably cost a couple of hundred to replace… It didn’t stop me though and I was right back in the fight 2 minutes later when I respawned.

I stole the first three photos from Robo Murry. Heh even though Mike is Asian, he obviously sucked at taking the team pictures… Oh well whatever I was happy that so many of the guys could make it out. πŸ™‚

Finally… A friend has been running an airsoft business selling FCC PTW guns & gear and I agreed to do of his tech work. He’s very busy with real life and running his real business so if I can help I look forward to it. Heh with that said some of the perks include free stuff to test (FCC likes how I am analytical and detailed when I test) and I also got a company FCC HK 416 that I can use as my own. πŸ˜€

PTWsFCC_416_1600

The FCC HK416 is in the middle, it’s the 10.5″ version so the barrel length is the same as my CQBR & MK18 Mod 1… Other than the cosmetic differences the gun is pretty much identical to my Systema rifles. πŸ™‚ For some reason the gun I received didn’t have a stock and I couldn’t fit the Systema crane stock over the FCC buffer tube it so I removed the Systema one from my M4A1 SOPMOD Block 2 and am using it on the 416 for now.

I didn’t get to game it today but am definitely looking forward to playing with it in the near future! I don’t have any real optics or flashlights to install on it right now but heh that’s that’s definitely on the list of things to get now.

A stay at home day…

So today Maggie, Brandon and I stayed at home all day and I absolutely loved it. The little guy was full of energy, jumping up and down on the bed and running around hte house. Later he was downstairs with me and since it’s cold down here I got him to wear the absolute cutest fleece jacket that we picked up from Bass Pro a few weeks back. πŸ™‚

20140217_09582520140217_12485420140217_125404

A bit later he found Maggie’s woodland camo hat as well as his cute little car watch and wanted to put them on. πŸ™‚ He didn’t nap after lunch so later in the afternoon he was really tired and kept trying to sleep, I wouldn’t let him and he got really mad telling me he’s sleepy and that I should go downstairs. Hehe it’s so cute to hear it with his baby voice. πŸ™‚

After dinner I wanted to test something with my MK18 Mod 1 PTW and the front pivot point on the upper receiver broke. Not sure what happened, but ya it just snapped right off and that really sucks.

20140217_183706

What a pain in the ass but I guess I’m glad it happened now instead of on Saturday when I’m playing. Don’t mind the rail, I had to modify the plate that makes contact with the upper so it would sit properly. Since this is my primary rifle, I took the upper off my M4A1 Block 2 PTW and am using that for now. I see that Redwolf has a Systema upper receiver available but before I buy that, I’m going to inquire with a teammate of mine if he can modify a real AR-15 upper to work with my gun. He’s done it in the past and a real upper will be a million times stronger than the Systema…

We’ll see I guess, will update this when more develops.

Replica Elcan SpecterDR

So on the weekend I picked up a used replica Elcan SpecterDR, I wasn’t in need of a new optic but I decided to get it because it was cheap ($80) and thought it would look good on the M4A1 SOPMOD Block 2 PTW. It had a replica Aimpoint T1 on top previously and while it did the job just fine, the replica Elcan would definitely look better on it. Hey I’m vain and like my guns to look pretty. πŸ˜‰

Elcan1Elcan2Elcan4Elcan3

The replica Elcan SpecterDR is obviously a very close copy of the real thing, my real gen 2 Elcan SpecterDR is shown next to it for comparison. There are subtle differences everywhere and I’ll let you find them yourself haha… The eye relief of the replica scope is decent, just a bit less than the real thing though with the fake one you can only look at it straight through. The real SpecterDR, the picture doesn’t totally disappear if you’re looking through it at an angle which is definitely handy.

At the 1x setting the picture of the replica Elcan SpecterDR is a bit distorted and there’s a slight magnification, more like 1.25x so it takes a bit of getting use to if you run with both eyes open (as you’re suppose to). I guess I could adjust to it if it were my primary optic but since it’s not I won’t bother. For the record the real Elcan SpecterDR’s 1x setting is a true 1x and you will not notice any distortion at all. 4x is decent and almost as clear as the real thing.

The replica Elcan SpecterDR uses a different battery (forgot which one, at work will update later) than the DL 1/3 N that goes into the real optic. Last but not least a real SpecterDR kill flash will not work with the replica optic as the threads on the real one are much thicker.

Elcans

For $80 the replica Elcan SpecterDR wasn’t super expensive, sure the casing is a bit beat up but I bought it used and it’ll mainly display piece. I don’t think I would buy one new as they go for $175+, that’s almost half way to a real optic (like an Aimpoint or EOTch) and a real one is a much better investment. For my uses though I’m happy, I’ll never use it and it probably won’t see the light of day but I’m vain and it completes the M4A1 SOPMOD Block 2 look. πŸ™‚

JetBoil SOL, another uniformed review

For over two years now I’ve been my airsoft teammates’ JetBoil cooking systems (god there are probably at least 10 of them on the team) to boil water for the food I carry with me out to games and while they’re all very generous, I’ve always wanted one for myself. I generally don’t like having to rely on others, the system is not super expensive so I figure it was about time I stop leaching and get one for myself. πŸ™‚

In late December, I went down to MEC and picked up a JetBoil SOL (aluminum version) along with 5 100g tanks of fuel. Initially I wanted to just order everything online but the fuel cannot be shipped, that’s why I had to go to the store.

JB_KitJB_Kit-Out

Included in the package is an orange plastic mounting base for the fuel tank, handy when you want more stability, the burner, a pot/pan support bracket that locks into place, a measuring cup, the aluminum cooking container and a sippy lid. Not included is fuel and again since it can’t to be shipped, that’s something you have to pick up in person. The nice thing about the JetBoil SOL (and all JetBoil units) is that all the components pack up either into or onto the aluminum cup including a fuel tank! That makes organization extremely easy, once everything is set just throw it into your pack and you’re ready to go!

JB_Burner_Tank1JB_Burner_Tank2JB_Burner_Tank3JB_Burner_Starter

To set up the JetBoil SOL first extend the legs to the orange plastic stabilizer and install it onto the bottom of the fuel tank (snaps on and off). Once that’s done flip out the fuel valve adjuster and screw the burner onto the tank. Now you have a choice, if you want to use a different/larger cooking pot you can install the pot/pan support bracket if not the burner by default supports the cooking cup with no additional tweaks. Note in the fourth picture my thumb is on the igniter, simply release some gas, press the black button and bam the system should ignite and you should have your cooking flame. If not press the black igniter a few times and you should be good to go.

If you’re having trouble igniting a flame close the fuel valve, look at the starter close and press the black button. Do you see a spark? If you do perhaps your tank is empty if not then perhaps you need a new starter.

JB_Cup_BottomJB_Cup_InstalledJB_Burner_CloseJB_Cup_Measurements

On the bottom of the JetBoil cup you’ll see the “FluxRing” which is suppose to spread heat more evenly along the bottom of the container and “concentrates the heat”. After putting the cup onto the burner, turn it so the cup locks into place. You’ll also notice that inside the cup there are some measurement levels so you know how much water you’re putting into it.

JB_Holding_CupJB_TopJB_Measuring_CupJB_Small_Fuel

The JetBoil SOL aluminum cup is wrapped with a neoprene insulator which JetBoil calls a cargo cozy and at one side is a nylon loop that acts as a handle. Even when the thing is full of boiling water the cozy and handle allow you to handle the cup and with the sippy lid installed you can drink coffee or whatever with out too much worry about spilling. The third picture shows the measuring cup which can also act as a container to eat food if you don’t want to eat out of the aluminum cup though it’s not insulated so it could get hot to hold and don’t let it near the flame or else it’ll melt.

Finally is a picture of the 100g fuel tank, according to JetBoil it’s suppose to be able to boil 10L of water though I can’t verify that value… It does boil water 800ml of water pretty quickly, in around 2 minutes from previous experience with other JetBoil systems. There are two larger fuel tanks that you can purchase, the 230g & 450g tanks however they’re obviously much larger and cannot be packed away into the system and will have to be carried separately. The JetBoil is also compatible with other brand fuel and worked just fine with a 450g North 49 Butane/Propane tank I had laying for another burner but note it is not compatible with Coleman propane tanks!

JB_Kit_Setup

Heh I’ve had the luxury of bumming hot water from friends for the last couple of years but that’s no longer necessary now that I have my own JetBoil SOL cooking system! To be fair I haven’t used this particular unit yet but I am familiar with JetBoil’s products as there are many of them on the team. The JetBoil SOL retails for $119 CDN and the small 100g fuel tanks cost $5, for that price it’s really a no brainer to get for people who are outdoors a lot and want to eat warm food. Mmm I’m already looking forward to the next mil sim in April, that’ll be the first time I actually use my own JetBoil.

I’ll report back about the JetBoil SOL then and post further updates when there are new developments but yeah I’m pretty happy with what I got. πŸ™‚

Solo Stove, an uninformed person’s review

The ice storm in late December really opened my eyes to the holes in my disaster preparedness plans. The family has lots of warm clothing (though only one low temperature sleeping bag…), water, non perishable foods & wood for my fire places but had I lost power there was no real way for me to cook anything! When Henry went to Lebaron, I asked him to pick me up a portable butane/propane burner and a few fuel tanks just in case and just over a week later I also picked up a JetBoil though the latter more for airsoft use.

Anyway both burners require fuel and while I have a decent supply of that, it got me wondering what would I do if even that ran out… Looking online I found the Solo Stove which is a small portable wood gasification burning stove that runs completely on bio fuel, pretty much anything I can scavenge from the environment. If I’m stuck at home and run out of fuel for the other stuff, I have at least a week’s supply of firewood so that could be used with the Solo Stove. Anyway I’m impulsive so I ordered one along with Solo Pot 900 and the Swedish FireSteel fire starter.

There was apparently an issue with the manufacturer’s ordering system and after two weeks with no word, I emailed them. It was quickly resolved and I received my order today. πŸ˜€

KitKit2

Everything is made of stainless steel, at least according to Solo Stove though I have absolutely no way to verify that claim.

Solo_StoveSolo_Stove_TopPotMeasuring

The wood sits on a raised grate platform that allows ash to fall through and the holes allow the Solo Stove to draw in air into the burner. I don’t know how wood gasification works but yeah it does that too which is suppose to boost efficiency. On the side of the Solo 900 pot are measurement levels so you know how much fluid is in the container.

Packed1Packed2Packed3

The Solo Stove burner fits perfectly into the Solo Pot 900 but then again they’re made for each other and as you can see I put the fire starter in the stove. From what I read and saw online, other people put kindling (dryer lint & cotton balls soaked in vaseline into seems to be popular) the storage area too. The pot then goes into a small pouch that allows it to be packed neatly away. Note the Solo Stove also comes with a storage pouch if you decide to just get the burner.

I think I paid ~$140 US for everything and lol for the record I’m not nuts. Haha I didn’t buy the Solo Stove because I’m worried about a disaster striking, rather Maggie and I have talked about going camping in 2014 and If we go out for an extended period of time I thought something like this could be more useful than hauling the JetBoil (need to write a review on that too) and many cans of fuel. πŸ˜‰ I mean there is also the added benefit of being useful in times of need but I’m looking forward to using this thing when I’m relaxing instead. πŸ™‚

That’s all I got for now, when I actually use the stove I’ll update or make a new post on its usability.

Aimpoint M2

For the longest time I’ve wanted a real Aimpoint M2 to run on my CQBR or SOPMOD Block 1 M4A1 and now I finally have one. πŸ™‚

Aimpoint1Aimpoint2Aimpoint3Aimpoint4

I purchased a used one on ASC for $335 shipped which is an excellent deal for a real optic. The Aimpoint M2 is NV compatible so if I want to run my PVS-14 behind it I won’t have a problem (though I probably won’t, I don’t like weapon mounted NV) and it uses the same odd/special battery that goes into my Elcan SpecterDR so woo for not having to carry a lot of different batteries around.

It didn’t come with a kill flash so I ordered two from Tactical Products Canada as I definitely have to protect this thing from being shot. Externally it’s a bit beat up but that’s fine with me as I’m pretty rough with my stuff anyway. Most importantly the optic works great and lol as if this was any surprise, the dot is much nicer than on the repro version.

Best of all when I get a real AR down the road, I can simply move this thing over to the real gun. πŸ˜€

MSA Sordin gel ear pads

Earlier in the month I purchased MSA Sordin gel ear pads from SRS Tactical for my 75310’s and man are cool. After the last airsoft game, I realized that if I want to use my Sordins for an extended period of time I’m going to have to do something to make them more comfortable and I think this was a good step.

IMG_7131IMG_7132IMG_7134

I guess this isn’t really a review since I haven’t gamed with them yet but am definitely looking to give them a shot for my next game. Will report back then how it goes, for now I think I’ll just walk around the house with it on and drive Maggie crazy. πŸ˜‰

First game of 2014…

So today I attended another LT game at one of the local schools (being torn down, totally legit school board is aware) and it was fun. Henry, Marcia, Stephen and Mario also attended and initially I was just hoping to be a shooter but Rob asked if I could command the camo team and I obliged. LOL I knew if he’s asking that he was looking for a favor and I’ve played with him for years so if I can help make the game run smoothly I will.

Overall the games were pretty even all day, though as the day wore on we started to win more and more of the battles which was nice. πŸ˜‰ In the last game the mixed team gave us a hell of a run but we were able to push all the way into their base of operations and totally wipe them out, from a command stand point that was very satisfying even though I wasn’t doing the shooting. Marcia brought her camera and took a bunch of pictures lately we’ve been too busy playing to take pictures so I was happy that she snapped these.

DSCN0298DSCN0300DSCN0301
DSCN0302DSCN0303DSCN0305

No action shots unfortunately and most of my video is of me giving orders and that’s pretty boring… Still some of the guys did some good pushes so I’ll see if there’s anything interesting, if there is I’ll post it on YouTube and post it here as well.

Ahh a nice way to start the 2014 airsoft season, this year is going to be awesome I can sense it!
