Good job!

So today the Beavers & Cubs went rock climbing and it was cute to watch.  None of the Beavers were able to make it past half way up the wall (I’d guess 15′) and Brandon was only able to go up 1/3 of the way before he got too scared.  That’s ok, I told him he didn’t have to go up all the way that I just wanted him to do his best and he gave it a good go.

It’s a shame he didn’t make a second attempt but that’s fine if he’s scared I don’t want to push him too hard.  Many of the Cubs did well and a few reached the top and even though Brandon only made it one third of the way up I’m very proud of him for giving it his all.

Hello Mr. Sun!

Ok so today’s post starts off yesterday after I returned from the range, my mom was watching Brandon, it was nice out so I decided to clean the inside of my and hers and you can bet Brandon would be doing some of the work. 😉

Brandon did a good job at vacuuming out the cars so I paid him $5 for his time. 😉  After my mom took them to the park, I continued to clean the cars, my Mini had quite a bit of dried mud on/in it due to the range trips from earlier in the year and I’m so glad it’s minty fresh now.

Anyway onto today, the weather was even better, according to my phone it got up to a high of 22C!  We didn’t do anything in the morning but right after lunch Brandon and I went to the L’Amoreaux park for the Beaver’s spring park cleanup and lol since we got there a bit early, Brandon we played for a bit while we waited for everyone else to show up.

The playground is really nice and the park has quite a few large hills so after spending time on the sand we climbed a big hill and lol Brandon was a bit scared of the heights.

We were picking up garbage for about an hour and a bit, we gathered 4 bags of garbage and it felt like we didn’t even make a dent. 🙁  How people can throw their trash on the floor is beyond me, I always tell Brandon to hold onto his junk till we get home so we can dispose of everything properly.

After the park clean up, we came home then went to his classmate Sophie’s house to play and they’re pretty cute together.

Sophie has two older brothers and one of them had a friend over too, the little ones played both inside and out and we had a good time.  LOL I wish I was young enough to be entertained by bubbles haha…  Now we’re just relaxing at home, looking forward to sleeping tonight as I had a pretty busy weekend and want to be rested for the work week.

Wendy’s Appreciation!

So the Wendy’s restaurant just south of Sheppard on Victoria Park has been a 14 year sponsor of the Beavers/Cubs group and last night we held our appreciation dinner there. 🙂

About half the Beavers showed up, not sure what percentage of Cubs came but it was a great time and even the Wendy’s staff was having fun.  I feel fortunate to be part of such a great group, the leaders here really do it for the love of children and other than being a dad, this is the most worth while thing I’ve ever done. 🙂

Just wish I was able to take a picture with B, but that’s alright the memories will last a lifetime.

Muddy Winteree

So today the Agincourt Beaver colonies held their annual Winteree at the Woodland Trails Scout camp and boy was it a messy one.  The temperature was around 5c and with the rain yesterday, much of the snow had melted and the ground was an absolute mud pile…  Still that didn’t seem to damper the mood of the kids, I think there were maybe 50-60 of them along with parents, leaders and other support personnel and it was great.

I was with Tanya manning our part of the course so I didn’t get to go along with Brandon but he had a good time.  Dave, Chris’ dad took a bunch of pictures and will be sending them to me, when I get them I’ll post them up. 🙂

At our event, the kids had to play two games.  One was memory, go into the field look up some pictures of pirates and pirate things (this year’s theme), come back and tell us how many they remembered.  There were 10 pictures and two teams got 9 but no one was perfect.  The next game was a treasure hunt and the kids were to find 9 things hidden in the forest and they seemed to like that one.  Regardless of how well they did everyone got to open our treasure chest to get a gold coin (foil wrapped chocolate ones) and it was fun to see the faces light up when they got the first look at all the candy.

The event was 2 1/2 hours long and it went by pretty darn quickly.  Unfortunately even though it was warm, a few kids got wet feet and a few others were cold so I handed out heat packs and even lent another Beaver an extra pair of wool socks that I keep in the car (yes I’m a geek).

With that said, no one got hurt, everyone had a great time so job well done by everyone.  Brandon had such a good time he’s still singing the songs from the afternoon in the evening lol.

Sorry kids, life ain’t fair

So last night the Beavers raced their Beaver buggies and almost immediately the kids started complaining… From “not fair” to pouting about the race results and other tantrums, I was happy that Brandon was well behaved.

LOL if looks could kill, I’d be dead a thousand times last night.

Kid overload!

So now that I’m an official Scouter, I have to attend all the gatherings and today was interesting.  One of the other leaders brought their pet snake and bearded dragon for the kids to see and boy were they curious!

To start the night off though the kids were colouring pictures of reptiles, later after playing games we decided to build a human pyramid and lol it turned out pretty well.  Running out of time, we didn’t finish it because we had one final thing to do and the kids put together paper turtles. 🙂  This is very rewarding and I’m so glad I’m doing it, can’t wait till next week!

I am now known as Thunder

So today the Beavers chose a name for me and I will be known as Thunder. Haha not bad at all, sounds tough and I’m so honoured that I can be a part of a great colony! The kids, well they’re young so they can be bratty but the other leaders truly do it for the children and it’s absolutely wonderful.

Haha maybe I can learn some more patience, I’m sure it’ll be tested. 😉

Skating!

So tonight the Beavers went skating and man was it fun!

It wasn’t suppose to be as cold but all the kids on the ice definitely didn’t seem to notice the temperatures and had a great time.  Some of the older kids were pretty good and were skating circles around the younger ones lol. Brandon did well, the kids his age all were close to the same level and the ones that didn’t know how to skate walked on the ice and had fun. 🙂  I haven’t skated in about 20 years so I bought myself a helmet in case I fall and woo I didn’t.

To be fair I was pretty unstable but if I start skating again, it’ll come back me. 🙂  We hung around the rink for just over an hour and decided to leave early because some older kids were playing hockey on the other side and there were more and more of them showing up so it got pretty crowded.  Ahh what a great idea and since the rink is close, I think I’ll take Brandon so he can practice on his own.

I’m a leader!

This morning I went to Silverdale to zero my Ruger 10/22 & CSA vz-58 rifles, the optics on the guns were bore sighted at home but at distance the bullet drops so I wanted to do some proper zeroing and now both guns are shooting great at 50 yards.  I can get the 10/22 (completely stock) and vz-58 to shoot 2 moa at that distance and I’m totally happy with that from both rifles.  I know I can dump a ton of money into the 10/22 but meh it’s for Maggie/plinking so it’s just going to be an inexpensive toy.  The vz-58 is “combat accurate”, I’m not doing any competitions and if I did I’d probably run with an AR anyway.

After that I wrapped it up and came home, nice that the traffic was easy and I got back just after 12pm.  Took a couple of hours to clean my guns then I went for a drive around town because I was bored at home. Not very environmentally friendly of me but with all this time off I’m getting so antsy, looking forward to getting back into the office to talk to everyone, though not necessarily the work haha.

Anyway tonight was a special night for me…  While I’ve been helping as a parent volunteer for Brandon’s Beaver colony, I’m officially a Scouter!  All I was waiting for was the police reference check which took about 8 weeks but yeah now I’m in and haha I volunteered to deal with kids aged between 5-8.

Tonight the kids were painting their beaver buggies and lol what a mess.  But they had fun, that and there were some games and I’m glad I can participate more fully now. 🙂
