We’re screwed

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, climate change is a civilization ending problem and all we do is deny it…  I really do worry what type of world Brandon and future generations will inherit and wonder how long humanity has left.

António Guterres, the United Nations secretary general, told global leaders this week that the world has less than two years to avoid “runaway climate change.”

“If we do not change course by 2020, we risk missing the point where we can avoid runaway climate change,” Guterres said during a speech at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and we are at a defining moment,” he said. “Scientists have been telling us for decades. Over and over again. Far too many leaders have refused to listen.”

“The time has come for our leaders to show they care about the people whose fate they hold in their hands,” Guterres said. “We need to rapidly shift away from our dependence on fossil fuels.”

Sigh I’m doing better than most but know I still have a lot that I should do in terms of lowering my carbon footprint. 🙁

What an asshole

There are a lot of despicable people in the Trump administration, Scott Pruitt is one of the worst and this is rather entertaining.

The EPA boss has so far resisted attempts to show the science backing up his claims. His critics say such evidence doesn’t exist, even as Pruitt has called for greater science transparency at the agency.

Now, a court case may compel him to produce research that attempts to contradict the mountain of peer-reviewed studies collected by the world’s top science agencies over decades that show humans are warming the planet at an unprecedented pace through the burning of fossil fuels.

Something tells me we’ll never see this evidence and I’ll do my best to keep up with this court case.

Oh as an aside, today is provincial voting day so go and make yourself heard!  I still don’t know who to support, though I do know I won’t be voting PC because Doug Ford is a phony.

I don’t like Trudeau

To my liberal friends who don’t understand why I dislike Trudeau, here’s a prime example.

“We are proud to make sure that we are supporting the growth in the economy, the good jobs for Albertans and all Canadians while we protect the environment,” he said.

The Liberal government announced Tuesday that it would buy the assets associated with the Trans Mountain pipeline project from U.S.-based Kinder Morgan. Long adamant that the pipeline expansion would go ahead, the government had its hand forced after the American energy giant backed away in the face of ardent opposition in B.C.

The Liberal government is hoping to entice another company to take over the project but if not, cabinet ministers have said they will move ahead with the pipeline expansion at a cost likely to top $7 billion, all at taxpayers’ expense.

Renewable energies are the future and we should get out of this oil business asap, retarded that we’re spending money to help a private company extract oil from the country.

This is why we’re doomed

If you visit my blog you know I don’t like Republicans and well this is why our civilization is doomed.

Brooks then said that erosion plays a significant role in sea-level rise, which is not an idea embraced by mainstream climate researchers. He said the California coastline and the White Cliffs of Dover tumble into the sea every year, and that contributes to sea-level rise. He also said that silt washing into the ocean from the world’s major rivers, including the Mississippi, the Amazon and the Nile, is contributing to sea-level rise.

“Every time you have that soil or rock or whatever it is that is deposited into the seas, that forces the sea levels to rise, because now you have less space in those oceans, because the bottom is moving up,” Brooks said.

Duffy responded: “I’m pretty sure that on human time scales, those are minuscule effects.”

The world and humanity won’t be able to adapt to climate change because Republican politicians are bought by the oil companies to be stupid.  Who cares about the long term survival of the species if one can make an extra buck right.

Impressive, go Portugal!

I was super pumped to read this, in March Portugal generated enough green energy to cover its energy needs.

Energy from renewable sources made up 103.6 per cent of mainland electricity consumption last month, according to data from the country’s power grid operator REN, although fossil fuels were used to occasionally top up the electricity supply.

I know not every country is not as fortunate to have abundant renewable energy available but realistically speaking, every country should shift as much energy production onto renewables as possible.  It just makes sense, once you lay down the infrastructure the energy is essentially free.

Aww

So this weekend I was suppose to do a two day pistol training session with WGT but the class got cancelled and the email notice went to my junk mail so I didn’t see it and yeah I drove to Lower Trent Fish & Game club early Saturday.  It happens, I was a bit annoyed but I like those guy so no big deal too bad though because this weekend would have been great to shoot in.

I got back to Toronto around lunch time and while Maggie & Brandon were out I cleaned the house.  My mom came by at around 6:30pm to pick up Brandon, he slept over so I could take Maggie out for a dinner and movie, we saw Super Troopers 2, it was pretty stupid but that’s alright the wife liked it.

Today I got the tires changed on the Mini, cleaned out the microwave and relaxed.

With all the great sun we’ve been getting this weekend, my solar panels are generating a lot of clean energy, 29.84kWh today and yesterday it was just over 31kWh.  I really need a way to store this energy, I’ve been talking to Joe (a registered electrician) about building a power bank so I can have a battery backup in case my area loses power.

Not what I had planned but it was pretty relaxing which was nice.

All fluff

A lot of my liberal or left leaning friends think I’m nuts for not liking our PM Justin Trudeau and this is a prime example of why…

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley declared Sunday they would spend taxpayer dollars and flex their respective legislative muscle to ensure the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline is built over the objections of British Columbia.

For someone who reaped a lot of praise for saying the right things about the environment, his actions have been the opposite.  Trudeau’s kept up Harper’s energy policy to a tee, promoting fossil fuels even though the future is renewable and it’s very disappointing.

Happy birthday babe!

Yay it’s Maggie’s birthday today and I’d like to wish her the best.  I won’t say how old she is, she won’t like that and this year I really couldn’t think about what to get her so I bought tickets to see the Blue Jays on Friday.  We’re not baseball fans but it’s something different and thought that she’d enjoy the experience, seeing sports in person is always more fun.

Also in a funny coincidence as if Tesla knew it was Maggie’s birthday, I got the email that our Model 3 is ready if we want the RWD version.

I’ve known the price for a while now as some of my friends who currently own Tesla’s have gotten their notice already and frankly I don’t know if we’ll go ahead with it any more as I don’t want to spend that much money on a car.  To some cars are a status symbol, toy or whatever but for me they’re purely utilitarian.  I was hoping with the long range battery and AWD that the car would top out at $60k but looks like that’s a pipe dream, I bet AWD adds another ~$10k to the price. 🙁

What to do, yeah it’s very cool and I love the technology but I just don’t want to spend that type of money on a car unfortunately.

This is really bad!

FFS climate change is real!  It’s still dark, the North pole gets no light yet will be above 0 in the middle of winter.

The sun won’t rise at the North Pole until March 21, and it’s close to the coldest time of year, but an extraordinary and possibly historic thaw swelled over the tip of the planet this weekend. Analyses show that the temperature warmed to the melting point as an enormous storm pumped an intense pulse of heat through the Greenland Sea.

Temperatures may have soared as high as 2 C at the pole, according to the U.S. Global Forecast System model. While there are no direct measurements of temperature there, Zack Labe, a climate scientist working on his PhD at the University of California at Irvine, confirmed that several independent analyses showed “it was very close to freezing,” which is more than 30 C above normal.

I’d say typically I’m an optimist for most things however when it comes to this possible civilization ending problem, I have no faith that humanity will do what’s needed to save ourselves.  I’ll live to see the effects of climate change but Brandon and future generations will have to live through the worst of it, all so some corporations can make a bit more money right now.  Absolutely disgusting.

FFS Climate Change is REAL!

God damn it why aren’t people taking climate change seriously!  We’re destroying the Earth simply because a small number of people need to make this imaginary thing called money a bit longer…

By telling the story of one polar bear, Nicklen hopes to convey a larger message about how a warming climate has deadly consequences.

Polar bears have long been unwitting mascots for the effects of climate change. As animals that live only in Arctic regions, they’re often the first to feel the impacts of warming temperatures and rising seas.

The large, half-ton bears find concentrations of seals on sea ice. During summer months, it’s not uncommon for polar bears to go months without eating while they wait for Arctic ice to solidify.

In 2002, a World Wildlife Fund report predicted that climate change could eventually lead to polar bear endangerment or extinction. Even then, the report found that polar bears were moving from ice to land earlier and staying on land longer, unhealthily extending the bears’ fasting season. By the end of summer, most bears studied by the World Wildlife Fund showed signs of starvation.

Sigh perhaps the human species really is a cancer to the planet.
