I think it’s just prudent for people to have some emergency supplies at home, Canada can have some really harsh winters and infrastructure problems are not that uncommon. This article about Mexico city’s water maintenance though makes me rethink how much water I store at home…
For days, Mexico City’s residents, and many in the outlying suburbs have been storing the water in whatever they can find, in preparation for the pipes going dry.
Water was officially cut to the city early Wednesday morning, and won’t be turned back on for 72 hours, according to Miguel Ricaño Escobar, a director in Mexico City’s Water Department.

I have ~200L of potable water at home but no source of additional water should the taps run dry longer (if it rains I have my rain barrels but I can’t drink that). It’s enough to cover me for maybe a week’s worth of cooking and drinking but not enough for me to run my toilets so now I’m considering increasing my water storage supplies… Sigh I know it sounds a bit paranoid but I don’t want to be left out in the cold with nothing should the worst happen and I need to rely on what I have in my home.
