So on Sunday Alan, Eddy, Mario and I went to shoot the CNE airshow and it was an amazing time! Equipped with the 300mm F2.8L IS MKII lens and a 2x Canon extender, I was at 600mm and frankly sometimes that was too tight! Mario remarked before the show got underway that he wanted to see the rivets on the planes and well believe it or not I was able to capture that level of detail! I wish I humped a full folding chair instead of just stool but I parked at Eddy’s condo then we took transit to location and it would have been a pain in the ass to lug but definitely more comfortable.
Next year we’re going to do it again and this time i’ll drive down nice and early so i can get parking and set up where we were this year, we were right by the water with no one in front. Haha Mario wants to rent a lens as well next year now that he saw the results I got.
I took just over 3,900 photos with my Canon 6D MK II and the last few pictures were actually taken with my Canon 5D MK II and the 24-70 F2.8L II lens, I had both ready in case there were wide angle things I wanted to capture.
Needless to say I was blown away at how optically awesome the Canon 300mm F2.8L IS II was, it’s noticeably better than my 70-200 F2.8L IS II and really allows me to see the small details like the rivets on some of the planes or being able to read the pilot names on the CF-18 jet. Man I’d totally love to get one of those suckers but ugh new it’s like $8,200 on sale lol. I don’t think I could hide that from Maggie and well she’d kill me (and rightly so) so I’ll have to figure something out, lol probably just renting something like this when I need to shoot something far away.
Unfortunately the Canon 6D MKII had problems with the right hand corner (cropped most of the images so you wouldn’t notice) so I’ll give Canon a call tomorrow and take it from there and if I have to send it back at least I got my backup handy.
Today we visited an old friend in the hospital, she’s there because of her high risk pregnancy as per her wishes I’m withholding her name because anything can happen and she doesn’t want anyone to know. Our fingers are crossed for her and there’s only 4 more weeks of waiting so we’ll know how everything goes shortly.
Had a great long weekend and I feel totally recharged for work and that’ll last about a day lol. 😉
