This may be a stretch but I believe this guy is alive because the shooter knew he was armed.

As for why the shooter didn’t come to his house, Joudrey says he suspects it’s because Wortman knew he was a hunter who had guns in his home.

“He knew I had firearms, which are legal of course, but he knew I was confrontational and I might interrupt his plan. That’s the only thing I can think of.”

It’s what I’d do, quickly secure the house, gather the family and wait it out while the cops are looking for the psycho. Too bad all politicians can do is suggest banning guns in an effort to stop crime, anyone who believes that is a simplistic idiot.
