Bend over please…

The US Federal Appeals court has stated that US customs has the right to search and copy data from any electronic devices which you may have when you enter US territory. I have nothing to hide but I still wouldn’t like someone going through my data, if I were to bring my laptop to the US, that seems like an invasion of my privacy…

Everyday I’m happier that I live in Canada and not in the Police States of America. This is an ongoing story and it’ll be interesting to see what happens when it ends up in the US federal supreme court.

Following in the wake of February’s news that customs agents were seizing electronics and making copies of all the files on cell phones and laptop hard drives, a federal appeals court has ruled on the legality of such searches. The result: Yeah, customs can do whatever it wants to your computer when you come across the border, without a warrant, and without cause.

Net Neutrality Part 2

Net neutrality, don’t think it affects you? Some ISPs are already bending the rules…

On november first the Canadian ISP Videotron laucnhed an all out assault on net neutrality, calling for of all things a tranmission tariff! This is exactly why we need network neutrality. This Canadian ISP already makes it’s revenue channel from it’s subscribers, but because their subscribers are actually trying to use the service they have paid for, this ISP is crying foul. Sorry Videotron, you sold a service and just because you are now having to deliver on it does not make it ‘unfair’.

Check out this site, there’s a lot of good information. Do yourself and every Canadian a favor write your MP (not just email or online petition), actually send a letter! A physical letter is more important and holds more sway than anything you can do online.

Edit: Daniel has written a very eloquent post on his blog on why Net Neutrality is important and it’s worth a read! Just saw this on the Toronto Star, if you’re not familiar with the concept of net neutrality this story should clear things up.

Since being named minister of industry last February, Maxime Bernier has set his sights on reforming Canada’s telecommunications laws. In only 12 months, he has overruled the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on its plans for Internet telephony regulation and introduced a sea change in the CRTC’s approach, mandating that the commission “rely on market forces to the maximum extent feasible and to regulate telecommunications services only when necessary.”

Indeed, the emphasis on market forces has been so great that the Minister from the Beauce might be better characterized as the Minister from Bell.

New laptop for mom

My dad has been talking to me for a few months about buying a laptop for my mom so she can play her online games (poker and such) from the comfort of anywhere in the house. Yesterday we went to Best Buy to pick up a laptop, I guess it’s was a bit of a belated birthday gift. πŸ˜‰

Mom_Laptop.jpg

It’s a Toshiba Satellite something (forgot the model number) and for a basic model it has some pretty nice features. Celeron M 380, 512MB DDR2, 60GB HDD, 802.11b/g, dual layer DVD burner and IEEE 1394, not bad for $700. The 15.4″ widescreen is quite nice (didn’t think I’d like that as much) but it’s a bit heavy at just under 3kg. Spent a few hours in the afternoon prepping the machine (getting rid of all the default junk trial apps, updating the OS, installing AV software).

I believe my mom was happy with the laptop but being her frugal self told us that it was a waste of money (she yelled at me first because she thought I bought it for her lol). Anyway I thought it was a nice gift and wanted to share. πŸ™‚

Retired from 3D benchmarking/overclocking…

After about 5 years of pushing videocards to the limit, I’ve decided I’m getting out of the game. It’s simple economics really and I just can’t afford to keep up when the top of the line videocard goes for more than $800. πŸ™ For those who do not know, with SLI and CrossFire added to the mix now computer enthusiasts need to buy two cards to run together.

It’s been a lot of fun and killed my fair share of cards through volt mods, phase change cooling and dry ice. It’s not as sad as it sounds I guess I’ll stick with trying to set records on the CPU front but no more super 3DMark scores from me. Heh it’s not as bad as it sounds, I have renewed my love for gaming and will spend more time doing that instead. πŸ˜‰

Two GeForce 7800GTXs are good enough for me, hopefully they’ll last for the next little while. πŸ™‚

New Azureus Client

To those P2P’ers out there, the new Azureus client (version 2.4.0.0) supports header encryption which means it gets by ISP Bit Torrent thorttling! πŸ˜€ Works well for me and you can get a copy here. nForce users just remember to remove the nVIDIA Firewall otherwise you’ll suffer from a huge memory leak issue. πŸ˜‰

Dual Opteron rig is up! =D

Hello there stranger. πŸ˜‰

Well after battling the flu for about a week I’m back up and running… πŸ˜€

Finally got the registered DDR memory for my Opteron rig and damn it’s sweet! πŸ˜‰ Dual Opteron 240 on an Asus K8N-DL with 4GB of registered ECC PC3200 memory and a 120GB Serial ATA HDD.

Isn’t it sweet? I was going to put it in a 2U rack mount case but it’s not here yet so into the Chieftec full tower it goes! πŸ˜€

Dual Opteron Goodness, kinda…

A couple of weeks ago, I bought two Opteron 240 processors on eBay for $65 ea which arrived on Wednesday. I picked up an Asus K8N-DL motherboard yesterday however I screwed up on the memory. Since each Opteron has its own memory controller built on die, four DIMM slots are required to be occupied (2 for each chip) however the memory I purchased (again on eBay ;)) turned out to be DDR2 instead of DDR memory… So much for a “computer expert” huh?

Luckily I was able to snatch a good deal on eBay for some real registered DDR memory which should be arriving next week. Here are a few pictures of my latest project, aside from the small hiccup, I’m very excited! πŸ˜€

Isn’t it cool? πŸ˜‰
