Gun laws ≠ common sense

Sigh the previous Conservative government probably should have taken care of this but anyway Bob Zimmer presents the “De-restrict the AR-15 petition” to parliament.  The petition is to remove the AR-15 series of rifles from the restricted category (which would allow legal gun owners shoot their guns outside ranges), I doubt it’ll go anywhere considering the Liberal government has the majority but who knows.  It’s the petition with the most signatures so far…

I mean I get it, the government goes after legal gun owners whenever there are issues (political low hanging fruit) but as a law abiding citizen and gun owner, it pisses me off to no end.  I just wish the community up here in Canada could unite, forget ideology we’re all in this together!

  1. Good luck with the petition Colin! Canada needs to adopt their own version of the 2A.

Are Canadians opposed to less restriction for gun access and ownership? Or is this just a political football that your politicians and LE like to kick around for votes? Is Canada ruled by Soccer Mom’s?

  2. When it comes to guns, Canadians are much closer to Europeans than Americans. We have mandatory safety classes & a licensing system (which doens’t bother me that much), registration of restricted guns (certain rifles, pistols) as well as strict storage laws. These are the rules of the land so legal gun owners jump through all the hoops but yeah it is a political football that’s used to appear to do something about crime.

It’s disappointing but yes I admit Canada is ruled by soccer moms. Trying to change people’s minds one at a time though, everyone new person I bring to the range sees that guns aren’t that bad and the attacks on legal gun owners have almost no bearing for criminals but that’s something we both know already.

  3. I admit I wouldn’t mind if the US had slightly more strict regulations for firearm safety and handling. Personally I don’t think that such rules would infringe on the 2A but I know many who think differently.

Maybe with your new gov’t it is time for change in Canada. Would you new Prime Minister be open to relaxing the gun rules?

  4. I don’t mind the safety class and licensing, it does a good job at keeping guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them in Canada anyway but yeah the 2A basically guarantees it so it could be a problem.

No the Liberals won’t loosen gun laws, the party membership is generally anti gun (I am a member of all 3 major political parties for other causes) though the PM said decisions will be made based on the facts and evidence so we’ll see how things go.

  5. Does Canada have a lobby group like the NRA? If so are they lobbying gov’t for changes in the gun laws?

I firmly believe in the 2A but I don’t see having background checks or a minimum delay to complete the proper transfer of guns as being a violation of the spirit of the right to bear arms. Although I m a card carrying member of the NRA I seem to be more “balanced” in my views then some of the more radical party members.

More Guns = More Fun but only if it is safely handled
    🙂

  6. The gun groups we have up here are very disorganized, like Canadian gun owners they like to fight amongst themselves. I’m a member of the big 3 up here but even though there are 2 million gun licencees, I think the biggest org has only 70k members. 🙁

I think your views are balanced and I agree guns when enjoyed properly can be a ton of fun but we got to exercise it responsibly.

  7. Colin, I’m very disappointed to hear about the chaos. Your Gun Groups need to organize under one banner if they want to be effective. There are many things I like/dislike about the NRA but when it comes to lobbying they have their act together. You need a Canadian Chapter of the NRA perhaps 🙂

Oh yes, one more thing … No more Norinco!

  8. That would be nice, last year there was a civil war in the largest gun org and had a very messy public fallout (at least public to the gun community) but the other two orgs are decent at lobbying the government, they’re just pretty small.

I agree there, there are things I don’t like about the NRA either but yes they know what they’re doing! Haha politics is not a contact sport like it is in the US, I think their style would be too rough for the politicians & public.

Haha, I don’t mind Norinco but if I can get the real thing I’d definitely prefer going that route. 😉
