Leave us alone!

So if you frequent my blog, you’ll realize that I’m pretty much as “liberal” as one can get (both socially & fiscally) and probably go beyond most liberals with my views in certain areas like drugs but that’s another conversation.  With that said I guess the libertarian in me also feels that a person should be able to do whatever the hell they want to as long as it’s not hurting someone else.

I’m licensed to own firearms, I get a background check by the RCMP everyday why the hell can’t I play with what I want?  Also I find it very annoying that gun control proponents use actions that happen in a completely different country with a different culture (towards guns anyway) against Canadian gun owners…

A Niagara Region gun club offered a discount on a “tactical shooting experience” last week, inviting visitors to fire 20 rounds from a semiautomatic rifle similar to the one used in the Orlando mass shooting.

Staff at the Silverdale Gun Club in Saint Ann’s, Ont., said they stood by the limited-time offer despite its timing, which was coincidental.

“We promote the sport of shooting,” said club co-owner Joan Miller. “It is one of the safest sports in Canada.”

Why is this even news, Silverdale is my home range and they have these Groupon packages year long, it’s an always on campaign!  Should car manufacturers or dealers stop selling or advertising cars that are in accidents or under recalls?  While I don’t believe the Orlando shooting was religiously motivated as the FBI has said his profile fits more with mass shooters, many politicians and much of the media are falling over themselves to say he doesn’t represent his religion, why does he represent gun owners in America or for the matter Canadian gun owners?!?

I don’t have a problem conceding that guns when used for criminal actions can do a lot of damage probably more so than someone with a knife but according to Statistics Canada, knives are used at three times the rate of guns for violent crime yet (clubs and blunt instruments are higher than guns too) we don’t hear politicians talk about that.  I also understand that it’s politically expedient to “be tough on guns” and legal gun owners to give the public the appearance that something’s being done but god damn it, enough! Leave me alone already, legal gun owners are not the problem and like I tell people who are homophobic, if you don’t like gays don’t be gay. Don’t like guns, that’s cool then don’t use them but don’t try and tell me what I can and cannot do!

It’s really a shame that the Canadian gun lobby groups have gone all in with the Conservative party and don’t know how to play the political game like our opponents do…

Like everything else, crime is a multifaceted issue which requires us to address many diverse avenues, blaming it on guns is just stupid especially up here where it’s so tightly regulated.
