One of the most influential books in the history of human civilization was published 150 years ago today, Charles Darwin’s On the Origins of Species. Considered blasphemy when it was released, the theory (albeit with slight modifications) has stood up to the test of time and is considered the gold standard of scientific theories.
Charles Darwin‘s On the Origin of Species, published on 24 November 1859, is a seminal work of scientific literature, considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. Its full title was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. For the sixth edition of 1872, the short title was changed to The Origin of Species. Darwin’s book introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It presented a body of evidence that the diversity of life arose through a branching pattern of evolution and common descent. Darwin included evidence that he had accumulated on the Beagle expedition in the 1830s and his subsequent findings from research, correspondence, and experimentation.
Thank you Mr. Darwin for revolutionizing the way we think about life on this small planet. 🙂
The largest most sweeping scientific thought of all time!! Charles Darwin is reviled by some for not blindly accepting dogma over evidence to the contrary. I think him a hero and courageous beyond measure. Yes the Theory is just that but it becomes more soildly proven each day in the fields of Biology Botany and in the DNA evidence available to scientific study.
Hi Jeff and thank you for taking the time to reply, yes I totally agree with your comment. Anyone who truly considers evolution just a “theory” is misinformed, there is no other theory that has stood the test of time and you’re right the latest cutting edge technologies are proving Mr. Darwin right over and over again. We owe him our thanks.
