The RCMP knew

The local RCMP was informed that the NS shooter was beating his partner and had illegal guns, yet did nothing about it.

Boe said she and her husband know what weapons Canadians are allowed to own with a Firearms Acquisition Certificate, and that they knew GW’s were not legal. So she told the RCMP that, and then in their presence, she called GW’s relative and put him on speakerphone so the Mounties could hear him:

So I called [the relative] and I said… “would you be willing to talk to the RCMP about what happened with [GW’s partner] and the illegal weapons that Gabriel has?” And he said, “no way, because he’s already told me he’ll kill me, because he’s already told me that he’s killed people in the United States.

And I said, “Okay …  just chill. Just relax. Don’t worry about it.” I hung up and the RCMP basically said, “the only way that we can actually get the information on this and prove it … like for her being beaten and strangled and stuff like that. She has to say it.”  And there’s no way that she would do that. Gabriel had her under his thumb. And I mean, literally. If her family came over, he would be right beside her. So she wouldn’t say anything to them about what happened at all.

According to Boe, at some point, GW pressured his partner to sell her vehicle and to work for him at his denturist office. Boe said that GW would leave his partner working in the city, and come to Portapique in the company of other women. When Boe spoke with his partner about this, she then confronted GW. And that’s when it “got scary” for Boe:

This is a complete failure on the RCMP’s side, if someone complained to the cops about me beating Maggie or about my guns, they’d come seize them in a heartbeat.  So Trudeau & the Liberal party says this was the reason they needed to ban assault weapons because obviously if it were in place, it would have stopped the guy from being a gigantic jackass, yeah right.

This is also smoke and mirrors, designed to take attention away at the RCMP’s failures here, they have blood on their hands.

  1. The gun legislation taken by the federal government was already in process before this incident. This specific incident is not the reason Trudeau and his team passed gun legislation at this time. It was already in the works. Do regulations have changed a lot since 2004 and I don’t think the domestic partner has to press charges anymore but yes, the RCMP could have.

  2. Hello Verna.

Thanks for your reply, I do believe the Trudeau government had something planned before hand however it was rushed. If you look at the list of firearms banned, it includes things that are already banned like missile launchers, mortars & RPGs. Also you’re directly conflicting what the PM said, that it was time to ban “assault weapons” exactly due to the NS tragedy.

Red flag laws have been in place since the current regulations (I think post 1996). If my wife or even a stranger calls the RCMP and says I threatened them (I don’t have to be convicted), the police will come and take my guns while they investigate & this is something one learn while doing the PAL/RPAL class.

As I’ve indicated previously I believe gun control can be part of the solution on solving gun violence however it can’t be the whole solution and whenever there’s a tragedy that’s all we ever hear from the government, more gun regulations.

  3. So, not quite in defense of the RCMP (they had repeatedly said, earlier on, for example, that he “wasn’t known to police”), but it may have been challenging to get a justice of the peace to sign off on a warrant to complete a search to obtain evidence for an arrest.

It would depend on how the reporting of the firearms occurred. If they had been advised shortly after they had been seen, then all the RCMP would have had to do is run a PAL check, and determine that he was not licensed, and that would likely have passed the test for “public safety”.

However, if it was reported months later, as part of the domestic disturbance, then it may not have been as easy to convince the justice that a search needs to be completed. The jurisdiction would also play a role in how that would be handled.

Granted, even then, I would have imagined that the police would monitor him in some way, to whatever level the resources available would have allowed.

RCMP doesn’t look good in any of this.

  4. It’s always easy to be a Monday morning quarterback but there were real actionable information available even if witnesses were reluctant. The conspiracy theorist in me does say the swiftness at which the government reacted to the tragedy with the gun ban was designed as a bait and switch so I hope that there is prolonged public spotlight on this matter.

They failed at their job and it costs a lot of lives, lives that would not have been saved by the gun ban.
