Brandon’s new kit

So just over a week ago I posted about Brandon’s new Canon EF 70-300mm lens and well it’s gone now.  The image quality was just too poor relatively speaking and while Brandon may not care now, he may in the future so decided to get an old school Canon EF 70-200 F4L IS USM lens and a Canon 1.4x MKII extender.  I already have a Canon 2x MKIII extender so with in terms of telephoto range, he should be set now with his Canon EOS RP.  I also bought the Canon RF 24-105 F4-7.1 IS STM lens & got that one because it’s nice and light, something that even Maggie would use.

Since I was bored at home, I did some as scientific testing as I can in my basement, on a tripod with as same settings and was surprised just how sharp the Canon EF 70-200 F4L IS USM lens is compared to my more modern lenses on the Canon EOS R5 body!  45MP will tax all lenses and the EF 70-200 F4L IS performed great.

I compared Brandon’s new lens with my Canon RF 70-200 F2.8L IS USM & EF 100-400 MKII lenses which are both excellent and the old F4L IS USM is actually slightly more magnified at 200mm compared to the RF lens.  Even with the Canon 1.4x MKII extender the image quality is very good and with the 2x extender @400mm has only slightly less contrast than the native 100-400mm MKII zoom lens!  Note it’s also slightly tighter than my big zoom lens, interesting.

Well in any case I’m pretty happy with this setup, it’s not too heavy and can grow with the boy as he gets better.  LOL this kid is lucky his dad is a pixel peeper and has a pretty kick ass kit that should cover I think almost all of his needs. 🙂
