Interesting video

So as a gun owner, I’m keenly aware I’m on the wrong side of public opinion but will continue to try to change that opinion anyway I can, anyway there was a video from TVO on the gun culture and well I thought it was interesting.

Since the repeal of Canada’s long-gun registry, gun sales are up, gun clubs are booming and a once silent minority is coming out of the closet. “Up In Arms” examines how Canadian gun enthusiasts are winning converts and building a powerful lobby in the image of America’s NRA. What impact will the pro-gun lobby have on a growing number of communities that are plagued by poverty, crime and gun violence? In these strikingly different communities, connected only by the gun, perspectives are set against the backdrop of disturbing statistics about the relationship between gun deregulation and gun violence.

A lot of my friends are always surprised to hear that I’m a gun owner considering politically I’m pretty left but to me I think as long as you’re not hurting anyone else, whatever you want to do should be legal.  As one of the speakers in the video says and I’m paraphrasing we live in a society of wants, no one needs a gun like no one needs a car or BBQ, these are wants and as long as I pass the tests & my daily background check says I’m ok, why shouldn’t I be able to enjoy in my case guns responsibly…

The guns and gangs problem is a real problem, I think one that could be done away with pretty easily if we end our disastrous war on drugs.  Prohibition simply doesn’t work (didn’t work for alcohol either), instead we should legalize everything, tax it and build treatment centers for people who are addicts.  I don’t do drugs, if they were legal I wouldn’t go out to buy them tomorrow, the war on drugs has only created casualties and empowered gangs.

Anyway back to guns, it’s an interesting video I don’t agree 100% with the pro gun side just like I don’t agree with the anti gun side but in any case there was a new video and I thought it was interesting. 🙂

  1. As an American citizen I applaud Canada’s move toward a more “gun open” culture. Good luck to all Canadian gun owners. Too bad your constitution doesn’t have a 2A but I guess that too can change over time. Guns aren’t the problem, people who use guns for crime are.

I know of many Canadians that have joined the NRA. I encourage you to do the same until a “Canadian NRA” is created. We are a community and we gain strength by banding together for a common cause.

By the way Colin I enjoy your blog very much. I will continue to follow it in the future. Keep up the good work.

  2. Hi John.

Thank you for your reply, yes we don’t have a 2A to protect us sigh we don’t even have property rights in Canada. I understand why politicians attack legal gun owners, it’s low hanging fruit and gives the public the appearance of something being done, unfortunately people don’t seem to understand that that crime is already illegal.

We have a few organizations up here but the community is pretty fractured and seems to prefer fighting among each other but it’s a start I guess.

Thank you for the kind words. 🙂
