Money out of provincial politics!

Well this is certainly excellent news!

Political fundraising legislation spurred by a Star series is now the law of the land.

MPPs voted unanimously Thursday to ban corporate and union donations to political parties, outlaw provincial parliamentarians and candidates from attending fundraisers, and lower contribution limits.

The public will be on the hook to finance elections but I think that’s the way it should be, this way those with money cannot buy influence and hopefully politicians can serve now serve the people instead of their donors.

  1. I applaud your country’s move to such a system. Far less “influence peddling” I hope.

  2. Thank you, it’s a provincial thing but definitely a huge step in the right direction. I hope it’s enacted at a federal level too. Rather surprising frankly as both the Liberal & Conservative parties definitely practiced chrony capitalism when they were in power but hopefully now they’ll work for the benefit of the people. 🙂

  3. It is not for us in Europe to say how you should run your government but “private” political party funding never leads to anything good.

  4. Oh no. I don’t know much about European political funding and am disappointed to hear that your parties can be bought too. 🙁
