Oh god no!

LOL at all the libertarians who thought Trump was an isolationist, anyway yesterday he pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear deal and I’m frightened that the US will start a war in Iran.  If you thought Iraq was a debacle, Iran has 4x the population!!!

The 2015 agreement, which was negotiated by the Obama administration and included Germany, France and Britain, had lifted most U.S. and international economic sanctions against Iran. In exchange, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear program, making it impossible to produce a bomb and establishing rigorous inspections.

I never bought into the it’s bad for Iran to have nuclear weapons argument, nuclear weapons are a political tool not one that’s used on the battlefield and who’s the US to say who should and shouldn’t have them?  If you look at the history of countries that acquire them, it’s been a stabilizing force and Iran has never attacked anyone, it’s wars have always been defensive in nature.

Sigh I have no love for theocracies but the US & the western world should stop meddling in other people’s affairs.

  1. Dear Mr. Sun,

As a Japanese citizen, the only country that has ever been attacked by nuclear bombs, I can tell you that nuclear weapons are NOT a stabilizing force. They are dangerous because a “built weapon” might become a “used weapon”. It is better off that we do not have them at all.

Even if Iran is a “peaceful” country seeing yet another nation acquire these weapons of mass destruction is intolerable. Instead we should make every effort to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power and redouble our efforts to remove nukes from the countries that already have them.

It is a sad reflection on Mankind that the road to peace is paved by building bigger and more dangerous weapons.

    Respectfully yours,
    Kenji

  2. Dear Mr. Sun,

Thank you for posting my comments on nuclear weapons, you honor me with your honesty, respect, and open-mindedness.

As you can see I am very passionate about the need to rid the world of such horrific weapons. No country should have them.

    Respectfully yours,
    Kenji

  3. Hi Kenji, thanks for commenting.

While I think we’d both agree that we’d prefer a world without nuclear weapons, the pessimist in me doesn’t really see that happening. Whether it’s nuclear power or conventional, when one side is dramatically more powerful than the other skirmishes often break out and I look at India & Pakistan as an example (though we could talk about the former Soviet Union and the US too) when Pakistan acquired nuclear weapons things toned down quite a bit. Yes there were still fights but at a much smaller scale.

I wish we could get rid of these things altogether, but the genie is out of the bottle and there’s no way of putting it back. The nuclear non proliferation treaty is a good start, Iran was a signatory since 1970 and I certainly hope it abides by that and I’d prefer the country not get one but whom are we to say they can’t have one when others do?

There are no real options here but with the US pulling out of the Iran deal, war in the middle east is much closer especially since Mr. Trump filled his cabinet with war hawks.

Sigh there are no easy answers to this mess and I hope saner minds prevail.
